THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, SATURDAY, JANUARY 27, 1917. 11 PROSPEROUS TIMES FOR THE POULTRYWIAN Scarcity of Laying Stock and Breeders Will Curtail Supply for Storage. BUTTERCUPS ARE .i POPULAR BREED From the Philadelphia North American. Should peace be definitely estab lished In Europe tomorrow, the enor , mous requirement In foodstuffs would place a. premium on everything eatable that America could export for the next five years. No matter how peace may be concluded, the several countries, concerned on one side will help pay the debts of the countries engaged on the other. To do this, either side must build anw its entire economic sys tem, and America is going to furnish the bulk of the material therefor. On the other hand, Bhould the war con tinue the disaster to economic condi tions will rapidly be aggravated and American exportable products will en joy greater demand. Demand for Poultry Products. Included in these products will be chicken meat and eggs, both in great quantities. Panics are usually caused by light demand from overproduction, with consequent stagnation of busi ness In general, tight money and low prices-; in the three months just passed the poultry Industry has suffered from art unusual pause, brought about en tirely through the high prices of poul try feed stuffs, while eggs reached an unheard oT price at this time of the year. ; Notwithstanding the very high prices at which eggs were selling, poultry raisers began flooding the market with every ounce of chicken meat that could be raked and scraped, that would leave Just a bare founda tion for next spring's reproduction. All over the country chicken meat brought ridiculously low prices, and there is now very little good stock for sale, with practically no demand be cause of the sustained high cost of feeds. Signer Prioei for Stock. There has not been such conditions In many years and the visdom, or laclt of it, in. creating these conditions will be fully demonstrated this spring. It is positively known trat higher prices will be asked and paid for hatching eggs,- therefore day-old chicks will bring higher prices. It is a fact that there is going to be ' less eggs laid next spring, because the poultry raiser has not the number of fowl necessary to lay them; a cur tailed egg yield means fewer eggs to go into storage, a greater demand for them and necessarily weaker competi tion betweeh fresh laid and storage eggs next fall, these two kind:, of eggs supporting each other in price. Xorelgn Demand Seen. Foreign demand is going to exert some influence on price; how great or how small will matter little, so lone as there is some influence exerted. To the far sighted man all these conditions will appeal, and he will take advantage or opportunity rarely or fered. Scarcity of laying stock, great er demand, because of sales the past all and -a steadily Increasing demand Tor" pcAiltry nieat arid eggs, brought about by the scarcity of meat of all 1 f J- I : M P'f ' ' " -S. -1 ;l Members - of the Portland Realty Board H. A captain of a ship bound for Amer ica stopped at the Island and bought some chickens for the ship's larder. On the cruise to America they laid so many large white eggs that the cap tain decided to keep them, so brought them into Boston, Mass., about 6a years ago. The Buttercup cock has dark red feathers, black tail and wing flight. and puff of white at the beginning of tlietail, green legs, red and white ear lobes and combs like buttercups. The hen is a light buff on breast and black mottles on back, also greei legs and same kind ear lobes, comb same as cock except smaller. Butter cup hens are layers of four years. Their best year Is the third year. They are non-setters, lay a large white egg, and are an exceptionally good table fowl. in the east a few years ago a Butter cup hen made a 300-egg record In one year. The cocks weigh from seven to eight pounds. Hens from four and one-half to five or six pounds. FAMOUS RIDGEFIELD ROIL. Fertile farms at fair prices. Fenced or unrencea tana; email tracts; acreage. H. In the elev enth week of the contest at Storrs the hens rendered a very pleasing verdict. They succeeded in laying nearly 20 per cent more eggs than in tho previous week and an even hun dred eggs more than in the corre sponding period last year, or a total of 2052 for the week. The break is still a little in favor of the heavy breeds. The Plymouth Rocks. Wy andottes, Reds and Orpingtons consti tute 56 per cent of the hens entered in the contest, but they laid last week a little over 60 per cent of the egga, whereas the Leghorns and Cam Dines, making up 45 per cent of the number of hens, laid a little less j Precis lialng U Home Sitea on West Side North. DESTROYING POULTRY MOB kinds, will place poultry raising far in advance of what It has been as a money maker in the next two or three years. Public sentiment is largely against cold storage as at present regulated by the several states; federal regula tion is necessary to prevent price manipulation and disastrous competi tion, along with gouging the consumer. Supply is Small. Spring eggs go into the hands of cold storage collectors at absurdly low prices, coming out when price juggling Is complete and the short crop season Is on. Egg, producers are ignored In the matter of fixing egg prices; likewise and by the same machinery the con sumer is never considered except as a gullible prospect. Since there is bo great a demand for poultry and such a small supply for next year's reproduction, it is neces sary that purchases of breeders, both maie ana remaie, be made at the ear liest convenient moment. Orders for hatching eggs and day-old chicks can not longer be safely delayed. It is is necessary to "buy more horses for next season's work, look them up now. No fowl can be a successful utility bird unleso it is pure bred. Mala 8tt3. Offlcea Wlllbrldge & Whltwood Ct. TITLE GUARANTEE & ABSTRACT, COMPANY. Abstracts, real estate, insurance. Dept. of Agriculture, Entomologists of the U. S. depart ment of agriculture have demonstrat ed that all species of lice which in fest poultry may be quickly destroyed by the application of a very small quantity of sodium fluorid, according to1 the annual report of the chief of the bureau of entomology just Issued. Entire flocks of poultry were cleared of the parasites in this way and were found to remain free when ordinary precautions were taken against rein festatlon by contact with infested fowls. In connection with this work the entomologists of the department made the first complete studies of the chicken mite and determined that it depends exclusively upon the fowl for its food and will not develop in any stage on filth or similar substances. Is. tests of a large series of insecti cides it was found that a few thor ough applications of crude petroleum to the 'interior of poultry houses will completely destroy the mites. Clean nesting material should be kept in the nest boxes. There should be one nest box for every four birds.
