PORTLAND, OREGON, SUNDAY MORNINO, JANUARY 21, 1917. CENTRAL BODY ILL GOVERN LOCAL COUR AFFAIRS NEXT SEASON Organization Movement Is - Launched at Meeting of 4 Principal Clubs of City. " J NORRIS IS THE ORIGINATOR Xd VU Triad Out In Irt Stat " TewBumt and W Adopted for CUtT Championships With Suoesss. A Orjranizatton of a central body to govern the tennis game in the city of Portland is contemplated. At a meeting of the chairman of the tennis clubs of Laurelhurst, Multno mah. Irvlngton and Waverley clubs. Conization will be perfected at another meeting to be held next monin. In attendance at the meeting wera A. B. McAlpIn of Multnomah club, A. D. 'Norris of Waverley Country club, E. A. Johnson of Irvlngton and S. B. Cooke and Clifford C. Harrison of Laurelhurst club. The organization grew out of the suc cess which attended the cooperation xArled out in the "bandllnr of the stale and city tournaments here last sum mer. A. D. Norris, who was manager of the Oregon state tournament held at ths Waverley Country club, was the originator of the Idea. In handling the state he asked the help of both Mult nomah and Irvin.trton clubs. When the city tournament was held by the Irv lngton club, Everett Johnson called ?n as well the laurelhurst club, which had -then started to take its place among the tennis clubs of the city. Idea Becomes Popular. 80 successfully did the move come out that at a luncheon given by Chair man Cooke of Laurelhurst last week It was. suggested that a permanent organ- ! Izatlon be formed. The scope of the body is to be large. A.-B. McAlpin, who Is regarded as the father of tennis in Portland, has been suggested as president of the organ latlorT and will likely be elected as such at the next meeting. He will have a vote only In case of a tie, the usual business to be decided by vote of tho chairman of each of the four big clubs. A secretary, who will work under the direction of the committee but will have no vote, will bewselected. Harri son was elected temporary secretary at the organiatlon meeting. The organisation will be affiliated with the Vnited States National Lawn Teryiia association and ita rules will fcovern. It will be the court of appeal ,from the decision of any referee in any of the tournaments. It will decide the Question 'of liJdbllltv of Dlavers and maintain an amateur standard in all tournament play. . - "Will EstabUaa Standard. A standard fop th tat nrt rttv (tournaments will be made and any club receiving these tournaments will be 'forced to live up to them. It Is In tended that this body shall portion out the state and city tournament each year. ' . The suggestion Is to be put up to the directors of each of the clubs involved 'for their sanction and If successful the permanent organization will be af fected. "It will be the ambition of this body . to further the tennis game in everyway possible in Portland," declared McAl pin. "We intend to pay special at tentlon to the younger generation and give every one of them an opportunity to grow up In the game. "With the movement for-supervision of tennis play growing all over the country we consider' the present the v proper time for starting such an or sanitation and hope to secure tho In- In tho city to our efforts."
