Conditions were so rood, even In thawing weather, that the little ear" riowea tnrougn- witnout tne use 01 chains and the weather near the moun tain was no warm and balmy that skiing and sledding were enjoyed with the participants wearing nothing but the lightest wraps. And when leaving the resorts after dark Sunday night, there was keen regret among every member of the party that Portland does not take more recognition of this play land at all seasons of the year. The Marmot road with the slight detour oy way of Sandy, was Just a little bit sticky in spots, but the Grant Just groveled down for a second anJ took the bad spots a-flylng, but cars much heavier and less adept on the road would not have trouble with chains on. The way from Portland to Sandy- is now, all rock or gravel and by taking the plank road over to the Sandy river towards Bull Hun, the right font up the east bank of the river, the one bad spot near Bull Run will have been eliminated. Just before reaching Marmot (Asch off's) the tourist will find some mud, butthere Is bottom and the Grant, for one, did not have to shift gears get ting through It. At Aschoff's is an other short piece of mud and then at Mlaslnger's Is a piece about 300 yards long which will make chains neces sary for some car?, but which, wet as It Is, has not even caused hard work for those who hare gone up in the last two weeks. j UTom men -tn- trie roaos have a sandy bottom which may hold water In puddle, but offer no resistance. Once up ir. the foothills the weather was like spring and the only thing to the contrary was the snow all , around. Just beyond the turn off .o "Welch's, the car planted both wheels In the snow and for several miles - trekked over the path wh)ch the for estry officials had plowed. That made It easy and chains were entirely un ' necessary. Beyond Rhododendron Tavern. This plowed way went a little ways beyond Rhododendron tavern, but afff I -M 'ffd .. ;-s tr r... ARE YOU DRAINING YOUR BAT TERIES trying to get yur starter to turn her over? DOES YOUR MOTOR OIL CONGEAL and fail to feed properly for the first 15 to 30 minutes while warming up? This is due to the use of a poor cold test oil which congeals or thickens up and does not flow freely in cold weather, mak ing the motor stiff and causing undue wear through faulty lubrication. To overcome these troubles and get correct winter lubrica tion you must use an oil that flows freely at zero temperature zero cold test oil feet. .Finally, the car was up against a pile of white that came half way I up the radiator, so here it was left while the party went on a jaunt on skis borrowed from Mr. Welch. None had erCr tackled them before and, to say the , least, the behavior was most ungainly. After several hours' practice. Anyway, they all got to the stage where It was easier to walk over the snow with sktis than mushing through it. Mr. Hebel's party was about the only party up there last week, though there had been several who had reached Welch's the week before. Formerly, when a man .was looking for a good motor and a food chassis at "under a thousand" he really thought that he had no right to expect anything that had much com fort and beauty besides. Two or three of the big builders are sending to Portland some of their proudest efforts In the way of big cars that have paved the way for the world e motor fashion. In this respect, this year's show will be different from any other, for the motor-wise no longer look to Europe for the best in lines and build. It only win be tne uninitiated who, on look ing over the lines of one of the stun ning models, will remark:. "Why, that looks exactly like the Daimler, or the RoUs-Royce. Fourteen counties in that year vote". against the bond measure and It only carried by the close margin of 93.297 for and 80,609 against. In the recent election every county gave a majority for the measure and In no coanty was the plurality less than 2 to 1. In one county it was nearly 20 to 1. Two counties which in 1910 voted 4 to 1 against bonds voted practically 3 to 1 in favor of the 191 Issue.
