TOWN TOPICS Two Bobberies Reported. Two mi nor robberies Christmas eve were in vestlgatetl by the police yesterday. At Ihe residence of E. V. Riley, 307 West Purk street, thieves secured 121 in money, seven pieces of Jewelry, includ ing a silver wrlat watch and a beaded purse. The burglars broke a window, and, reaching within, opened the lock. The Richardson grocery, 94 Bast Four teenth street north, was entered by boys, who stole candy and a package of leadpenclls. Jackson, head of the educational de partment of the Portland Forestry nervlco, returned from Seattle, where he had gone on a business trip, in time Longshoreman Goes Free of Suspicion Thomas Nichols, longshoreman, who was arrested yesterday morning by Deputy Coroner Smith for investiga tion In connection with the death of his wife at their home, 162 North Tenth street, was released by Detective Captain Baty today. The police at first thought that Nichols might have struck his wife a blow that was indi rectly responsible for her death, but the autopsy performed on the body showed that death was the result of valvular heart disease. The woman was 65 years old. Alcoholism Is said to have been the conrtlbuting cause of her death. Nichols, after sobering up in the city Jail, showed real grief at the death f his wife, to whom he had been marled 24 years. Both had been drinking the night before, he said. The body Is still at tbe publio morgue. Burglars Believed To Have Started Fire Burglars in the house are thought to be responsible for tbe fire that seri ously dam&ged the two-story frame residence of J. Alameda, 602 Bast Pine street, shortly after 8 o'clock last night Although all the members of the family were away for the evening, the firemen, when they arrived, found the gas lights burning in the upstairs rooms. Three bedrooms upstairs were practically destroyed, tog-ether with the contents. Fir Marshal Stevens, engines 7, IS and 23 and truck 4 an swered the alarm. Eight Below, Going Down, at Spokane Spokane, Wash., Dec. 26. (U. P.) Spokane citizens awoke this morning to find six Inches of snow covering the city and surroundings, and the weather intensely cold. At 8:30 six Inches of snow had fallen, and th thermometer registered 8 degrees below tero, with the mer cury still dropping. The local weath er bureau announced that the cold spell might be Indefinite. Aged Couple's Lives Close on Christmas Santa Monica, Cal, Dec. 28. (U. P.) Together even in death, as In life, Mr. and Mrs. John Lavelle, who cele brated their golden wedding a few years ago, will be taken tomorrow side by side to their graves. Theirs was a happy Christmas, for it was decreed that their oftmentloned wish that both should die together should be granted. Both were taken sick the same day at their ranch near Beverly. Mrs. I.avelle passed away late Sunday night. Three hours later Lavelle, from whom the tidings was kept, joined his wife in the hereafter.
