The players at in a circle -and bne began with a very sad face to announce "Mra. Mc Gee Is dead." Immediately the neigh bor to tha left asked, "How did she die?" and the first replied, "With one finger up, Just like this V making the action to suit the words. The query and response went right rou mi tha circle until each player was sit ting with a solemn face and one flnser raised, , -ut.n ik, fin) vii rsachefl aaain the sama statement and question were ABKeci again, dui me hi.p- to "With one finger up and one blind holdinar the lid 'down with the raised finger, anl o again arouna ine circie. third repetition the answer camo "With one finger up and one blind eye and her mouth all awry," and this time the players twisted their faces as absurdly as possible. Probably by this time there was considerable difficulty In keeping from laughing, as all tha players were looking absolutely absurd. However, the crowning effort was required at the laat repetition, when the descrip tion of Xh lamented laJy's demiea was with one finger up and one blind eye "and her mouth all awry, shivering and shaking just like I," and all fie players looked as idiotic as ponsiruo, shaking from head to foot as though they had palsy. Of course, the object in this game was to keep serious, for every one who laughed or forgot to act the pait when giving the description was fined a forfeit Or else marked a bad point, the winner naturally being the con testant who was quite perfect, or at least had the fewest bad marks to his credit. COURAGE What we can do is SO UttlA. nur courage to do it so much. Courage is, in fact, our life to tell our selves me truth, and tn An Maurice Hewlett. Sell W.it Pn I By Ella McMunn. This morning I went through 'six blocks of wonderful smells the pub lie market and from the first stall where a man was bathing some rad ishes clear down the line to where a box of clams were reaching out of their shells for adventure and yet -withdrawing hastily at the slightest prospect of fulfillment, I minced along and marveled. The funniest thing I saw was what appeared to to be a bath sponge lying alongside of some meat, and I wondered if times really were ao hard that people ate those because they made such a last ing diet. But before the clerk an swered me he asked where I came from, and when I said "near Salem," he smiled and told me what every thing else was In the store, and that the sponge was a cow's .stomach. But I'd like to know the Joke about Salem, for Just now I can't think of much about It except that you can go to bed there at 7 o'clock and sleep all night and the next day If you want to, and you don't have to shut your window to keep the noise out, or put a pillow over your off ear to shut out the hiss of the steam pipes and your bed doesn't feel like a slab at the undertaker's. Guaranteed Errs There. At the next place X saw what looked like a bowl of Grass Au Tep 11 tz rose buds, but when a man stabbed one of them with his pocket knife and the blood rushed out I had to look quickly at aome calm, cool tur nips and some guaranteed eggs that had the hen's nam or something on the shell. A "Baby Beer sign drew a lot of people and ao did the baby beers father and mother hanging up by their heels with their heads and hides off and a lot of holly wreaths on them and some flowers carved on their sides. If only there had been some music it would have been al mbst as nice as a funeral. Then there were a lot of little rabbits with blood on their heads where they had been clubbed to death to save bul lets. Their bowela were gone but they still had fleas. Although when I left there were not ao many on the rabbits no, certainly not on the rabbits. One man urgently requesteed ma to buy a dead chicken, and when I had exhausteed alt my "arguments against It, it occurred to me tc in quire what was the cause of tha chicken's death, and It took ma 20 minutes to explain to him that hav ing noted no marks of violence upon tha fowl I wondered bow he had caused It to pass away and still look so life-like, without any feathers and with a bunch of parsley under one wing like a bride's "arm bouquet." I think I made peace, anyway be apol ogized when he saw that tha wet mackerel he waved had allppad out of bis hands and landed upon my shoe. At one place they had wooden pincers to handle the smelliest . of the fish but a woman wanted to poke them with her fingers Ao she had to wipe her hands on the clerk's apron, but even then Bhe needed a finger bowl, lacking which she kept thrust ing her fingers Into the hearts of the moist lettuce leaves. They Tell a Story. But all of the talk down there wasn't about "cabbages and kings," for two men, sent unwillingly to mar ket by their wives, were talking about same prominent society people of the North End, and if anybody didn't know where that was, they had only to stop and look at some pumpkins or j hominy or something near by, for the. I man who was hearing the story was jverV deaf, and the man telling It was not and had good lungs and both were (lawyers. Throughout the killing re ' cital they reached down into a keg of kraut and let vinegar drip over 'their chins while they talked, and the ; story must have been a long one, for as I looked back I could see ever ao many people buying kraut and hom iny and cabbages at that stall. A bill providing for imprisonment of those found guilty of cornering food stuffs Was offered by Senator Poln- , dexter yesterday. EARLY WINTER 13 SUCH a beau tiful time of tha year that one would think it was & happy time for everyone man or beast. The trees, aa they gradually abed' their - golden dresses and make ready for the win ter's Test look happy; tha akiet are rosy and clear and tha fields look smiling and restful after their sum mer's work. All the little woods', peo ple have their cupboards filled for the winter-time and are ready for play when the aun shines warm. It doesn't sound like a time of trouble does it? And it wouldn't be a time of trouble either, if only folks understood about the woods creatures and cared for them aa they should be, cared for; in deed it wouldn't be! But unfortunately all folks don't understand, and so the beautiful autumn-time brings trouble for our friends In the woods. Foxy Squirrel knew that -trouble was likely to come, because he re membered the happenings of last year; Toppy Cottontail knew, that his care free days wouldn't last all winter be cause he, too, remembered. But the woods folk never worry about trouble till trouble comes and even then they do not really worry, they only do all they can to protect themselves from danger. And really, when you never worry about trouble till it comes, you save yourself a lot try it and aee it yon don't! So, even though he knew that dan ger might come any day. Foxy had played as happily as could be and hadn't worried a mite. But one morn ing, when the aun shone so brightly that all the world should have been happy and at peace, he heard the sound that told him danger was near. Of course, you know what he heard he heard 'the sound of a gun,! The roar rumbled through the bare branches of the trees and echoed clear through Shadow Woods. , Foxy didn't wait to figure out what UNIVERSITY STUDENT BODY TO ISSUE BONDS lie went up the tree on the side away from the noise of the gun. he had better do, no slrl He Just scampered up the tree and into bis nest as fast as ever he could go, that's what he did. And I'll tell you how he went; he went up the tree on the side away from the noise of the gun- on the side away. Maybe you haveV noticed tnat yourself; If a squirrel Is afraid of you, he will run up his tree on the aide away from where you are standing. If he runs up on the side nearest you, he is telling you as plain, ly aa If he spoke, that he la your friend - and that he Is afraid of you no longer. After Foxy reached the shelter of his nest, he began to plan how he could help his friend Toppy Cotton tall, for ha knew that the gun meant trouble for Toppy more than for any one else. "I must think of a way to help Toppy, I must!" he thought. Tomorrow -Toppy is Warned.
