THE , OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND. SATURDAY. DECEMBER 16, ;1916. 'A SHIPPING MAN S SEEKING DATA FOR STEAMSHIP LINE Representative of Olson Line . Touring Pacific Coast Now .Making Inquiries, PROMISED LINE FORESEEN V Scandinavian Interests now Harked Attention to Paelflo Trade Pafflesaar to Betnrn. Ttepresentstlve of the Norway-Pacific line, Thorles 8. Fuslesanr. w.ia in Portland momentarily this morning and will be back here to conduct nego tiations towards the establishment of that service to this coast. The Norway-Pacific line is the natr.e chosen, by the Olson Interests for its Paclflo coast branch. The Olson in terests own and operate a big fleot of steamers and motorehips under the Norwegian flag, several of which are to be placed on a run to this coast. Fritz Olson visited this section over a year ago and at that time stated that such a service would be Installed. There were delays, however, ' due to war conditions but It seems probable that they will be active In this trade shortly. Three steamers have been sent to t-he coast for cargo, bringing coal from Norfolk to the navy yards on this coast. Sufficient cargo to fill each was secured at Han Francisco and the ves sels came no further north. With the Johnson line also figurine; on service in this direction and various Norwegian firms interesting them selves in this vicinity. It would appear that the Norwegian statement of go ing after the Pacific trade was, indeed, being fulfilled. Blair 8eeks Charter. Ban Francisco, Dec. 16. O. L. The body of a man, about 40 years old, believed to be Fred Rienecker of 607 East Thirty-first street, from a card found in his pocket, was found hanging from the limb of a tree in the old part of Riverview cemetery about 11:30 o'clock today. The body, suspended by a short rope, and so close to th edge of the ceme tery Jhat It could be touched from the road, was first discovered by children playing in the graveyard. The man was well dressed but the only marks of Identification were a card of the Order of Maccabees and TO TAKE, PEOPLE INTO WORTHY INSTITUTIONS COULD OBTAIN THE NEDED ADDITIONAL CAPITAL IF THEY WOULD LET THEIR WANTS BE GENERALLY KNOWN This Is View Taken of Situation in Portland by One of the Leading Capitalists; Judicious Advertising and Nerve to Branch Out Declared Prime Necessities. Informed that there sre several man ufacturing enterprises in Portland which are in an almost comatose con dition for lack of money, concerns that would pay well if properly financed, a gentleman of considerable capital re marked: 'Then Why In blazes don't they let the fact be known? If they are ss worthy as you believe I am sure they" can be helped, but how -can this be Lrought about unless their condition be made public?" The man's query is easily answered. It Is one thing to understand the manufacturing end of a business, and another to promote it. Many a man comes into possession of a meritorious enterprise and falls to make a success of It for the reason that he lacks the "nervy" spirit essential to "lift" it out of oblivion and hold it up to the in spection of mankind. ' Then there are the "timid" ones, when it comes to presenting their own proposition to strangers, and likewise the kind who are too short sighted or too "close" to spend a few dollars to MADE PROSPEROUS BY SHIPYARD ACTIVITY "Our business has increased 400 per cent in six months," Martin Leiser, proprietor of the Electro Galvanising Works. Twenty-second and Reed streets, declares. "It is the shipbuild ing industry that has occasioned this. Of five ships contracted to be built at Aberdeen, Wash., four have ordered their tons of bolts made in Portland, mostly by the Portland Bolt Manu facturing company, and these will all be galvanized by us. I believe we do all the work for the Grays Harbor shipbuilding plants; for Kruse & PanJ(S, of North Bend. Or.; the St. Helens Shipbuilding company, St. Helens; McKachern, of Astoria, and we are galvanising 20,000 bolts - for the Willamette Iron Works, likewise for shipbuilding purposes. We have gen erous orders, too, from the Northwest Steel company and do some work for the Columbia Engineering Works, though this institution is not yet in full swing. The Peninsula Shipbuild ing company is also one of our sub stantial patrons, so that It is little wonder that we are growing so rapidly. The body had evidently been hanging from the tree for 24 hours before found Deputy Coroner Smith took the corpse in charge and will conduct an investigation. It . is belleveJ possible that the man came from Vancouver, Wash. Mrs. Rlenlcker reported to the sheriff last Tueaflay tbat her hus band was missing since last Satur day. Fred Rienecker le his home last Saturday morning, saying he was go ing to see the stock show being held at the Union Stock Yards. Just be fore he left tbe house he wrote a check to pay his dues in the Order of Maccabees. He was also a member or Washington lodge, No. 4f, A. F. and A. M. He was a foreman at the East Side Mill & Lumber Co. in Sellwood. He was laid off work for a tew days be cause of ill health, caused, his wife says, by worry over the European war, as he has four brothers In the Oerman army. It is said he had no financial or domestic troubles. Company Financed To Construct Ships Seattle, Dec. 16. The Anderson Shipbuilding company, which secured contracts some six weeks ago for the construction of two 9000-ton steel freighters at a plant to be established on the east shore of Lake Washington, was capitalised Friday for II, 000,000. Eight thousand 1917 aufomoblle tags were shipped out yesterday by Secretary of State Olcott to the owners who had their applica tions on file with the motor vehicle department. It required 132 mall sacks to handle the shipment. The licenses are mailed at this time to avoid the Christmas congestion of the mails and gst the tags to the owners by Decem ber 61, when the old ones expire. When writing or calling em advertisers please mention The Journal. (Adv.) properly exploit their weakling. They ought, in justice to themselves, do so, but they cannot be made to see the necessity. These linger along perhaps for years, finally to enter into that "rest" which knows no awakening. In New Orleans and St. Louis, for example, manufacturers organizations buy whole pages In the daily news papers for the purpose of advertising their product's, each paying its share of the cost according to the magnitude of Its output. And they keep this up year in and year out, holding it to be a part of their legitimate expenses. They find this profitable or they would not continue the practice, and those of Portland have made a start In this direction by their announcements in their cards presented to Journal readers In the Saturday Issues of tho paper. Those, however, requiring additional capital to place their factories in the best condition are silent, almost, as the grave, and it is hard to surmise why they do not speak out To do so might be their salvation. The future surely looks good to me." Mr. Leiser has trebled his force in the last half year, and la now con suming from 400 to 500 pounds of sine daily, the price of which is about a third higher than a year ago. Copper plating is also one of Mr. Le leer's specialties, and he likewise manufac tures copper kettles and copper colls. He has Just completed 400 feet of four Inch copper coil, and has facilities for making any size desired. THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT "We are loaded to the roof with orders for Christmas boxes, auid there fore' there must be stacks of money In the people's pockets," declares F. Dlel Schneider of the Oregon Paper Box factory. "It's the best Christmas trade we ever had.'" Similar expressions are heard from .the management of all factories af fected by Christmas business. All are prospering. Useful and Sensible Suggestions If joa are baring difficulty In selectlng yoor Xmaj presents let Journal ada assist yoe.
