J-, -" THE OREGON DAILY JOURNI PORTLAND. SATURDAY DECEMBER 16, 1818. 12 EASY TO MAKE PROFIT FROM A SMALL FLOCK Occupant of City Lot or Sub ; urban Home Has Chance With Poultry. 7: liy O. G. Small. ,To make a profit of S3 per head year from a few hens as a by-work for '' the occupant of a city Jot or tbe real- Cent of a suburban home, ia not a dif ficult, undertaking. If the right start - 5 ! mada and the work Is not neglected " afterwards. It Is easier. In fact, to S make a profit of 3 per head from a 7 small flock that' la favored with the 'tw minutes of devoted care each day -. which induces them to give prolific ..yield, than it la to obtain $2 per head X- from a larg-e flock which must be man- 'aged In a mechanical way. Large i flock cannot be given the same per-.."'for-al attention even when the keeper devote his whole time to their care. '; ; To ' start right, keep only the best ifapeclrncns of heiilthy birds for both ' laying and breeding purposes, and no 1 more than run be properly handled on - lithe available space for yarding anil the '.time whl. h ran bn given to their care without neglecting other work. When ;the quarters are conveniently ar ' ijWngeil and a good svstem is carried -out for feeding, gathering the eggs, 'cleaning the houses, etc.. one hour's -.' 'iVt'ime each day divided Into three or " four intervals will keep as many as i J 100 hens In a prosperous state of pro- -duct I on.' Coupled with this practical rework .should also be the thrift of inak ...ing the pennies do the work of dollars In providing necessary equipment. A ,i ; little Ingenuity turned loose among a '. tw carpenter tools, dry goods boxes or " 'iwaste lumber, usually to be found . about the premises, will accomplish -. wonders In constructing perfectly aerv f --'iceable equipments of roosting quar ' tera. scratching sheds, brood coops, : ,food hoppers, etc.. sufficient to accom . modate all the birds that can be ranged on the place. This equipment would ; ..cost a good sum of money if all new . material was bousht. although giving io better service for practical usago. The aim should be to keep down the ''overhead expense; keep up the maxl . mum yield from the hens, and develop "and utlllie all the products they pro ' ' duce, or as many as possible, of table hatching eggs, day or month old : Chicks, broilers, friers, capons, roast "',. ere, laying hens, breeders, show birds. feathers and fertilizer. It Is not the .fault of the birds that all of their yield i tint mad nan nf. nor can the enersrv .'r profit from them all be converted , Into the principal products of table ! aDd meat. Therefore, more or 'lass of the possible gain goes to wast' r-.or la absorbed by being added to over ; v head expense. Exclusive of the first cost for yard ; .'ing facilities, utility hens of the best ' quality can be ralaed and kept to the end. of their third laying year for 5 . '." per bead, and It Is a poor specimen of ' this class that cannot be Induced to yield 116 during that time In the five 'IS products of table eggs, hatching eggs, meat, feathera and fertilizer. If keep 4 Ing only 15 hens, for example, and the price for table egga Is 30 cents per dozen, five dozen sold for hatching at - SI Bar setting of 15. will give a clear ;,. gain over the market price for the k iimi number of egics of S2.50. The (imt hens yielding 120 eggs each a year, but occupied for three montha In hatching and brooding, will be produc 4. lng equivalent to ISO eggs each at an ''t- average price of 85 cents per dozen. No matter how clever the keeper may be in practical poultry raising, -.Without keeping a complete record of ''.'.'.'vary Item of expense and income, it 19 very difficult to reasonably estimate . ;the amount of money to be made. Off ' hand estimates are only theories, but .''.' tha balance sheet gives facts. Not '-- only thia, 'but for the current compe tition. It Is believed that better prices :-WlU prevail, boycotts and lnvestlga tlona to the contrary notwithstanding, : Thera appear to be very plausible rea ,aona for believing that the average Uprlc of egga-for the coming year will be higher than heretofore. In the first .'place, there are fewer eggs In storage hy perhaps a million coses than at this time a year ago. Furthermore, thare are Indications that a great many fowls have been marketed because their own . The exhibition will Include Leghorn Is Hodler Of Many Records On Egg Production The White Leghorn hen has been a consistent high producer In egg-laying contests, as evidenced by reports from all over the United States. It Is almost needless to argue In favor of the White Leghorn, for her records and popularity speak for ttiemselvea. The busy little Mediterranean bird Is at once one of the smallest In body, the busiest In spirit and the highest in yield of the poultry tribe. Lady Eglantine, th world's record hen, was a Leghorn. She produced 315 eggs In a yea. Lady McDuff, the champion In Oregon, the first of the 300-egg hens, was mostly Leghorn, and many other record holders, also, are Leghorns. Beslds being large of production. the Leghorn yields the fine shelled white egg which the trade always de mands. No poultryman can go wrong by keeping and properly caring for the Leghorn. CROPPING FLAN FOR POULTRY Green Food May Be Had the Year Around in Moderate Climate. Green food for poultry may be pro vided throughout the year in a large portion of the country by using two yards alternately; that Is, a crop Is pastured In one yard while an other crop is growing in the second yard. The following plan Is suggest ed by specialists of the department' as adapted to moderate climatic condi tions. Tha crop grown should be the one best suited to the particular local ity. For the extreme north or south the dates should be modified. Thickly sown crops furnish succulent food and summer shade. April 1 to July 1. Growing (yard 1), oats, chard or lettuce, clover or vetch, sunflowers (shade and seed), cowpeas. rape. Feeding- (yard 2), winter rye, winter vetch, crimson clover (New Jer sey and south), sweet clover. July 1 to October 1. Feeding (yard 1), oats, chard or lettuce, clover or vetch, cowpeas, rape. Growing (yard , buckwheat, dwarf Essex rape, flat turnips. October 1 to April 1. Growing (yard 1, oats, winter rye, winter vetch. sweet clover, crimson clover. Feeding (yard 2), buckwheat, dwarf Essex rape, flat turnips, soy beans. PCTALLUP IS EGG PRODUCER Supplies More Than Any Town Be tween Tacoma and Seattle. Puyallup, Wash., Dec. 16. Dealers In fancy eggs say that Puyallup has sup plied more eggs this season than any city between Tacoma and Seattle, said W. 11. Paulhamus. association presi dent. Mr. Paulhamus believes that this Indicates the value of the western Washington experiment station, which has taught many farmers how to care for their chickens. Association store reports shoy that the farmers who sup ply the most eggs attended the winter session at the atatlon yast year. That Puyallup is overlooking her best asset in not raising more chickens is the opinion of Mr. Paulhamus. He de clared that there should be one acre of chickens for every acre of berries; that 100 per cent could be realized on an investment of a few hundred dollars mat cmcaens should be allowed to scritch In the berry fields for the nur pose of cultivation and that every hen will mean a profit of from 11 to $1.50 a year. Give Green Food. One reason why eees are not lM in the winter months, even where there are pullets. Is that the summer supply vi wuniia. Dugs ana insects is cut off ana no meat substitute Is given to take their place. The hen Is an omniv orous feeder, requiring-both meat and vegetables. Hens Need Meat. ! Meat In some form should be sup plied to the fowls. They need pro tein, and In beef scrap, this Is found in good quantities. Good beef' scraps '""'"i irora aw .10 99 per. cent, . Over 4000 birds will be on exhibition. Sixteen Judges will be used In picking the prize winners. By-Product of Flock Is Very Valuable The manure produced i a valuable byproduct of poultry raising. It is estimated that the average night drop pings of a hen amount to 30 to 40 pounds per year. This represents the manure which can certainly be saved with the exercise of a little care. A conservative estimate Indicates that this manure contains fertllzing con stituents which would cost 20 to 25 cents if bought In the form of com mercial fertilizers at ordinary prices. A flock of 100 hens would, at this rate, produce manure worth $.20 to 825 per year. If, however, the manure is not properly cared for, as much aa one half of Its fertllzing value Is likely to be lost. To prevent loss, frequent cleaning of the dropping boards is nec essary, and some sort of absorbent should be used dally, dry loam or road dust.or, preferably, mixtures of these with such materials as land plaster, acid phosphate and potash salts, has been recommended. Sawdust has also been used with good results at the rate of 10 pounds per hen per year mixed with 16 pounds of acid phosphate and 7 pounds of kalnit. This gives a fertilizer which contains about 0.25 per cent of nitrogen, 4.5 per cent of phosphoric acid and 2 per cent of pot ash, and Is worth about 810 per ton at ordinary prices of these fertilizing constituents. It is a better balanced fertilizer than manure alone, and is usually In better mechanical condi tion ror application to the soil by means of fertilizer distributors or ma nure spreaders. With the present high price of potash salts it is impracticable to use such materials in the way suggested, and it may also be Impracticable to use acid phosphate. In this case somewhat larger amounts of sawdust should be used. Sifted coal ashes may be used as an absorbent, but wood ashes or lime should not be mixed with the manure. as they are likely to cause the loss of the most valuable fertilising constitu ent, namely, nitrogen (ammonia). Oc casionally the litter from the poultry nouse may be mixed with the manure. Thia Increases the bulk, but greatly re duces the value per pound of the ma nure and makes It difficult to apply to the sou. except where It is to be broad casted and plowed in. Poultry manure Is more valuable than the manure of any other common farm animal, and is particularly well BUS THE WIFE GUARANTEED 349 MORRISON ST. Wholesale loss of young chicks from bowel trouble has put a lot of poul trymen out of business in the sections where thia disease has become preva lent. W. F. Rettger of Yale university. They found that the infection responsible for this fatal form of bowel trouble Is harbored In the ovaries of some hens the eggs of whtch may Infect the chicks hatched therefrom, By testing a few drops of blood from hens that are candidates, for breeding pens, a poultryman can tell whether his hens carry the germs of Infection of the disease.
