The balance of unshipped -orders for rail delivery Is reported considerably in excess of 8800 carloads by the West Coast Lumber men's association. Car shortage has become so serious with tho shippers that the Interstate Commerce Commission has sent two Inspectors out from Washington, D. C. to conduct an investigation. These men are William E. Weeks snd George B. Winter. They are making headquar ters at tbe New Richmond hotel, Seat tle, and are reported in constant con ference with lumbermen and other shippers of the Pacific Northwest. Car Shortage tbe Cans. The weekly trsds baromettr of the West Coast Lumbermen's association, which deals with production, orders and shipments, shows that, owing to car shortage, stocks at the mills are ac cumulating rapidly, a dangerous mar ket Indication were It not for the fact that the unshipped production Is well covered by orders snd the supposition that the accumulating stocks will therefore be worked down to normal as car supply Improves. Orders last week were reported 18. 41 per cent in excess of production which in turn showed a curtgilmest of more than IS per cent. The actual output of the week was 63.711,460 feat. Orders amounted to 78,081.384 feet of which 62,778.000 feet was placed by eastern and middle west buyers; 18.889,208 feet by the cargo trade, and 6, 477,11 feet wag represented in home con sumption or local purchases- 2gnyrs TrjraT to Cover. The buy ing spurt is attributed to the fact that dealers with short stocks are seeking cdVer, and that middle west concern whiejh usually buy yellow pine have been compelled to look to the west coast for supplies, the western car shortage up to the present time not having been as severe as that In the south, although reported to be gradu ally developing toward more stringent hipping restrictions. ' Advices from the south ta west ooast mills are said to Indicate that a' number of the leading southern pise mills have withdrawn salesmen and are not attempting to take on any more business until the car situation improves. Lt week yellow p'.ne, pro duction was 15 per cetn belpw normal and shipments were reported 1.42 per cent below production. Tair Voltxxne of prdr On the Pa cific coast tidewater mills report a very fair volume of orders and a fall ing off in shipments. However, there are Indications of active water ship ping the remaining months of the year, owing to the number of sailing vessels du to arrive in the export trad which closes the week with 63, 902,020 feet of lumber held at the mills for want of ocean tonnage. Coastwise domestic lumber orders for last week amounted to 19,810,708 feet and export orders 7,021,600 feet, giving a total of 19,838,108 feet ef new cargo business as against water ship ments amounting to 9,S36,8T9 feet.
