It was a fine audience a thousand strong and it followed the speaker from point to point with generous ap plause. , "The question that confronts the people of the nation is whether they wish to choose a man as their leader who is untried and has not performed, or to choose one whose record of per formances is before them," Senator Chamberlain said in opening his ad dress. "Promises have been made for many the country the progressive and con structlve legislation that has been en acted during the last three years. But every time the years swung by with the promises unfulfilled until Wood row Wilson and his administration re deemed the pledges of the past, and wrote the promises Into law. "Taft and the platform on which he stood in 1908 promised many things, but the promises they made were broken promises, and when he came back in 1912 to make those promises over again the people repudiated him and.put Wilson into power to redeem the pledges that had never been kept." legislation Is Reviewed. xhe senator reviewed the legislative program of the past administration. and as he passed from the discussion of the reserve bank system to the rural credits act, the direct election of senators, the child labor law and the long gamut of constructive legis lation resultant from the efforts of President Wilson, his audjence met the points he made with round after round or spontaneous applause. "Nearly every progressive statute that has been passed in the history of this nation has been for the protection of the weak from the strong," the senator said. "They were not unjust measures, favoring the weak to the hurt of the strong, but they have been measures to protect the defenseless from the greed and the avarice ot those who have grown rich, the power ful and the merciless at the expense I of tne weak." i Statement Za Demonstrated. measures eiiacieu Dy tne present ad ministration.
