Commissioner Baker who originally suggested the plan says that the ex perlment was a Joke because of the failure of the police to cooperate in carrying on the experiment. Baker called the matter to the atten tion of the council yesterday afternoon and men are to scrape the white paint ed atrlps from the street Immediately. Allied and Bulgar troops are battling for possession of th hills leading down to Monastlr, about 11 miles away. A Serbian army that crossed the Oreek frontier more than a fortnight ago has foughti Its way to a plateau northwest of Kaimakchalan. The Serbs are now driving northward in attempt to flank the Bulgars out of Monastlr. On the allies' extreme right in the Struma valley, the British have re pulsed successive Bulgarian counter attacks. Official dispatches from Bucharest today admitted that the Roumanians have retired across the Danube, after making a successful raid on Bulgarian soil, but brought no confirmation of the Bulgarian official report th.it about 16,000 Roumanian troops were wiped out. Sofia Contradicts lie ports. Sofia, Oct. 8. (U. P.) Not a single Roumanian soldier of the 15,000 who crossed the Danube and were encircled and cut to pieces by the Bulgars now remains on Bulgarian soil. It was of ficially announced today.
