THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND,, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1916, 7. CHARGE THAT TARIFF IS NEEDED TO RETAIN v.- PROSPERITY REFUTED Figures Show Exports to Peaceful Countries Three Fourths 1912 Total, EXPANSION IS STARTLING Kognes' assertion Tbat Xetnra to mrs-Aldrlch Tariff Is JTecessltr Sard to Understand la Tace Tact a. MISSING YOUTH IS SOUGHT BY FATHER -. Washington, Oct. . Startling -panston of American commerce with th countries not engaged In' the Euro pean war 1 the blgr development brought out In the July summary of thelinlted State department of corn mere. " The new figure add overwhelmingly to the array of facts which refute the ,- charge of Candidate Hughes that . America's present prosperity Is "tem " porary war prosperity" which can only .be continued by going back to a Re publican tariff. These figures show that: " American exports to Kurope for the first seven months of 1916 Increased , 81 per cent over last year. To Peaceful nations. American export to the peaceful continents other than Europe Increased during the same perlqd 78 per cent and reached the vast total of 1805,780.000. '" In other words, our commerce with tha neutral nations Is growing at this time, and has been since January 1, twice as rapidly as our commerce with Kurope. During seven months from January 1 to July 31. 1916, we have Increased our exports to neutral continents oyer and above the record for the same period In 1912, as follows: . AU Exports Show Increases. . Our seven months exports to South America are 1117,970,000, against 178, 1(1,000 In 1912 a gain of over SO per cent. Our exports to the West Indies are 1106.679,000. against only 950.000,000 for 1912 a Jump of over 100 per cent. Our exports In seven months to all North America Including Canada, Central American states, Mexico and Island' countries reach 1482,749,000, against $217,324,000 In 1912, an in crease of over 50 per cent. Our expqrts - to Asia In theKamo period reach the phenomenal tibial of , 220.345.0ao. against only 173.724,000 In 1912 an Increase of nearly 200 per cent. And our exports to Africa and Oceania are 984,700.000. against $56, 100,000 In 1912. which la approximately a 50 per cent gain. Xaorease Is Phenomenal. Our domestic exports to non-belligerent continents, reaching $905,780,000 as .stated above, are nearly three . fourths as great as the total exports to all the world. Including Kurope, dur ing the corresponding period in the Tayne-Aldrlch time of 1912. American grown and American made products have carried the flag of peace and prosperity to the neulral , and non-belligerent continents washed ; by the aevfh" seas of the" globe', until thlji peace-Vorn commerce has grown since the Taft administration by ap - proximately $380,000,000, or 72 per cent, as the record of a seven months' v trade. Hughes Charge JTot TTphelo. For a complete calendar year, at the M.ma. rat, the rrosth woulif h ft850.00,Q0O over the record of 1911 rand not a shipload of it entering a war Tracked European port, or protected by Aa high tariff wall. 'v With our export to peaceful eontl t.iients three-fourths the total volume to all continent during the period of . the Payne-Aldrlch tariff, it la hard to calculate how Candidate Hughe ex- pects to win the credence of the Amer- '! icat people by charging that our pros iprlty "temporary war prosperity" rthat can only be saved by going back v to the Payne-Aldrlch tariff. i - III - I J-' "- J i V J i f Harry Girard.
