Bj It. A. Cronln. , The memory -of men runneth not to the time wben SI rune were made In a baseball gam In Portland. There for It was probably fitting and prop- er, yesterday afternoon, that Del How ard, in his supreme disgust, picked VP the ball, walked out to the pitcher's box asd beg-an flipping- pills at the Beavers. The old boy sot by too, until bis fllpper refused to flip any longer in the seventh, and Ray Boyd was called In to finish It. After McCredie took Byron Houck out with a nine run lead, be would have done well to emulate Howard, for ten runs were made off Blgbee and Kelly before they could get the Oaks out. Del Looked Like Pitcher. The feature, of the game outside of Cunningham's hitting, was the pitching of Del. Tha old boy is the best looking pitcher in the league from the shoulders up and he had more o&t there' in the box than his walsfflne. He had a deceiving movement to first, wore glove on his left "hand and kicked at the umpire on balls and strikes. 1 So, therefore, Farmer Hucklns, wan dering Into the park from Wasco county, couldn't have told the differ ence between Del and an honest-to-goodness slabster. Also, he struck out Brother Ivan on three well di rected "curves'" over the ohlold, no matter if Brother Ivan cracked a two bagger to right field fence later in the contest Of course. Del's right arm may be. too sore to sign the semi monthly payroll October 15, which causes one to wonder at the nerve of the Oaks in even expecting him to do It. t In passing, It might be remarked that the Beavers won the game, 18 to IS, getting 20 hits to IS for the rlsitors, who fielded without an error, while three were chalked up against Portland. , . Xrerybody Got a Kit. About the only fun the Beavers 'had out ,of it was the increase In their batting averages, Byron Houck getting three hits in as many times up. This has caused great worry to Al Sothoron, who has been leading the right-handed pitchers of the: club in hitting. , Among the incidental things. Chuck Ward had only one time at bat charged , against him, walking thrice and get ting a sacrifice fly. Cunningham got a triple, a double and two singles in six times up. Once, the game ap- proached horse play when Kelly rolled the ball along the ground to Howard to put Joe Berger out. It is a cinch that Joe isn't a "two-gun" man. The only thing missing was a home run and a balk to make it a perfect ex ample' of a Hickvllle corner-lot ball game. The score: OAKLAND. AB. B, H. PO. A. E. Mlddleton. If .. Pry Waylnfo Field By Frank O. Men.. Boston. Mass., Oct e.-r-d. N. 8.) -Once again Boston is in 4. he throes of baseball frenzy. Twenty thousand visitors are here with but a single purpose to pry their way into the Braves' field tomorrow for the opening gam of the world series between the Boston Red Sox and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Uetting is 10 to 6 that tha Sox will Win tomorrow's game. If Rube Mar quard does not twirl for the Dodgers. The strangest thing about the'comlng series is the fear and respect which Boston fandom entertains for the southpaw. Pf sffer, , Coombs or Che ney are not feared. But Marquard is, and this fear is reflected in the odds. The weather man's prediction for to morrow Is cheering. California Eleven Gets Test Tomorrow San Francisco, Oct. . (TJ. P.) When the Oakland Originals don their frotball togs at Berkeley tomorrow afternoon to meet the California varsity, they will battle with a furi ous, bloodthirsty bear, not the play ful cub that they Jostled two weeks ago. Ever since last Saturday's game, when the varsity all but lost to the Olympic club, the football can didates have been subjected to caustic criticism by tha students and sar castic advice aa . well as unusual gruelling by the coaches. The result Is a determination to prove that the scoreless game with the Winged "O" was on account of an off day by a campaign to roll up the biggest score ever made by 11 men. There's another reason for expect ing a furious fight by the Californlans tomorrow. The big game of the sea son, the battle with the University of Oregon, is Just two weeks off, and the showing made tomorrow will largely determine the men to oppose the northern university. With th exception of Sharpe at quarterback and .Bill Russell at center. Coach Smith Bays none of the men are sure of places against the Bearer state varsity until they make a showing tomorrow.
