CANDIDATES Marion, Ind., Sept. 51. (I. N. S.) The Republican situation in Indiana la somewhat precarious. . The Progressives are divided, but even those Progressives who are will ing to accept Hughes are balking at voting for Harry S. New for United States senator to succeed Senator Kern, and James Watson, who is anx ious to replace Tom Taggart. New is chairman of the committee which greased the way for Roose velt In the Republican convention of 1911, and Watson is of the etandpat test of standpatters whose name will be recalled, among other thinga, in eonneetion with tha Colonel Mulhall revelations. Earnest Republicans and Progres sives who desire Hughes to win are declaring that the name of Watson on the same ticket with Hughes is a menace to the latter's success. Practically all hope of clecitn Wat son has been abandoned by the Re publicans who privately are conceding Taggart's election. The Republicans and Progressive are concentrating all their attention now on tlie national ticket. Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Mis sourl are the four states in this sec tion which are regarded as pivotal, and inasmuch. p,s both vice presidential candidates come from Indiana and there are two United States senators to be elected as well, the fight in this state la already at a fever heat. The question at issue is an Inter pretation of the teachers' tenure In office law enacted by the 1913 legls- ature. Attorney Fulton, representing the school board, pointed- out to the court that the law provides that per manent teachers "shall serve in such City and County Officials Agree to Divide Expenses. City and coun ty officials made an inspection this morning. It is proposed to tear out about 400 feet of the sewer in a change of grade. About 100 feet has already been blown to pieces by dynamite. The cost of replacement is estimated at between $3000 and $4000.
