Sharpest Advance for Years Is Made in Chicago Wheat Chicago, Aug. 9. (I. N. 8.) Not for jn bas there been such a sensational grain mar ket that witnessed In the pit at the open ing today. September wheat was up December 8c snd May Traders were wild. The market waa literally swamped with buy ing orders and naturally the Immediate ef fect was a reactionary tendency. The market had been well cleared of short oMera wbm the first figurea were posted. Tbe report, as analysed here, provides hardly enough grain for domestic consumption. Where, theg, trad er ask, is Europe to get bet grain ? Foreign crops show sn unquestionable short age and Canadian grains are classed In the "northwest" damage. Some of the heaviest buyers today, therefore, ojiersted on the as sumption that from now on the country that psys the highest price will get the grain. It is thoroughly expected that there will be numerous reactions In the market, howoer, although conditions warrant a continuation of the advance on a gradual scale With supply and demand at all times the controlling factor. Corn" and oats reflected on a more moderate scale the advance in wheat. When wbcat started to react, both grains sold off frac tionally, thus provlnit their tendency to fol low tbe leader Instead of asaumlug an Inde pendent position. Trade of the United States with ' Russia shows a larger percentage of gain and a greater piospect of perma nency than that with any other of the countries at war. A compilation by the foreign trade department of ths " National City bank of New Yoflt shows that the exports to Russia In th fls- ool year ending Juno SO, 1116, are) 10 times as much as in the fiscal year ni4, the year Immediately preceding1 ' the war, while those to Franco evnd Italy are about four times au much, anil to Great Britain three times as much us lu 1914. Official flgursj for the. 11 months ending with May, 1916. show -exlports to all Russia 281 million dol lars against 29 million Intho sama months of 1914; to Krense J55 millions against 153 millions; to Italy 245 mil lions against 69 millions, and to Groat Britain 1353 millions against 58 mil lions in the corresponding months of 1914. Should the June 'figures pfoVe approximately equal to those of May the total for tho full fiscal year to Rusftla would be 10 times as much as in 1914, to Franca and Italy about four times as much, and to Great Britain about three times as much, Kvn mora Important in th fact that the war exports to Russia are mora largely of ft class of merchandise f which she Is likely ta contlnua A large Imporu-r than In the case with the other Europoau countries. Whlla exploslres and other dcathdeallns da vices do form a considerable percent age of the exports to all of the ooun tries actively at wa-, the laigor part consists of articles llltoly to be also required on a return to pace, rail Hats te AftYanee. Higher man ufacturing costs, brotght about by th4 dye scarcity, the Increase in the eoti jf fur, trimmings and 'bor, Will dfiva tne retail price or son nais up so cents for the fall trado, according to th John B. Stetson company. Another fouture of the coming season Will be the Change to lighter shades. The pearl gray and kindred shades running Into light green will ba evident. Thia has been the result of the stringency In dyestuffs. Black dyes a'.d tha deeper greens have been unusually scarce. For this reason the derby -.vlll, to a large extent, give way to the soft hat be cause of the variety of -shades tha lat ter type allows. The Stetson output this year, it was said yesterday, Will aggregate about 80 per cent in soft hats, with derbies consuming the re maining 20 per cent. At the factory of this company It was asserted that the cost of maklne; hats of both grades had Jumped 50 per cent In the last 18 mcnths. In tplte of this, however, RP.les for the fall season have estab lished a new high record. DAIRY PRODUCE ON COAST Seattle Market.
