executed one of the greatest plays In
' the history of the national game of
; baseball here yesterday afternon when
he put out thre men unassisted.
This performance was about the only
class shown by Rodftf-rs' team and the
Bees won, to 0. Piercey allowed the
' Beavers only two hits, while his team
The unassisted triple play earner In
the second Inning. The Bees were at
bat. Ryan singled and Orr walked.
Then Ouignl lined to flodgers. who
tagged Orr on the line and touched sec-
end, getting Ryan.
Third Time In History.
According to Spalding's 1916 rec

For a time It looked as If a wild
throw by Ward was about to spoil a
great pitcher's battle because Kyan
scored In the seventh on the third
baseman's feverthrow of first. Al
though hit hard up to this time. Kelly
had prevented Salt Lake from scoring.
In the eighth, however, the Bees
turned loose with their customary fin
ish. Shlnn was hit and liner filed out.
Buddy Ryan cracked out hi fourth hit
against his old friend McCredie for a
double against the fence. Orr drove a
long single to left and sent In both
runners. Oulgnl cracked a safe one to
left and brought in Orr.
The victory today made It seven
straight for the Bees. The score:

the scores except the deciding one came
In the early part of the game.

feat has been done on the Oakland lot.

Four grolfers who have been playing
the g-ame well during the past four
days will contest the semi-finals round
of the western coif championship in
today's matches. Douglas Grant
and Clarence Mangham will meet in
one of the matches, while Heinrlch
Schmidt and Roger D. Lapham are
the rivals in the other.
Grant and Armstrong were the star
attraetion yesterday but the match
ended on the thirteenth green.
Grant defeated Armstrong 6 and 5.
While Grant's victory was not unex
pected, there were few who thought
he could establish such a big lead on
the California champion. Armstrong
was not on to his game, while Grant
played steadily and well.
Grant had Scottv four down at the
end of the first sixteen holes of the
match. A missed putt on the seven
teenth reduced the lead to three and
the eighteenth also went to Arm

With a percentage of .389, Tris Speak
er is today etlll leading the American
league sluggers, according to averages
which include Wednesday's games. Joe
Jackson is in second place with .360,
but Cobb has gained on Jackson, so
that the Georgia peach is only three
points behind the White Sox batsman.
Chick Gandll has lost the nonor of
leading the league In sacrifices, Eddie
Collins and Buck Weaver of the White
Sox- and Vltt of the Tlgera each
having 22.
Cobb is running away with base
running honors, having 36 steals to
hia credit. High of the Tanks, who
la only batting .205, Is next with 2 2.
Elliott Says He Is Willing.
Lob Angeles. Cal., July 21. (U. P.)
"Howdy" Elliott, acting manager of
the Oakland club, admitted he was
somewhat surprised yesterday when he
learned of Del Howard's purchasing
President Leavitt's hsre of the league
trailers.
"I wouldn't mind working for How
ard." said Elliott. "He Is a fine fellow
and I would have no objection at all to
staying with the team If I get the right
sort of salary."
Tennis enthusiasts are anxiously
awaiting the opening of the 1916 state
championship play on the courts of
the Waverley Country club Monday.
Sixty-eight players are entered in the
men's singles, "but It is believed that
the list will reach 75 on account of the
committee setting back the closing
time one day.
Catlin Wolfard, who was one of the
semi-finaliBts'last year, will be among
the participants. He attended the
Stanford university last semester, and
devoted much time to tennis; and as
a result, is playing a great game. A.
C. Kehoe of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, is
also entered. Brown and Allen, hold
ers of the doubles championship of
Seattle, filed their entry yesterday,
and the Laurelhurst Tennis club en
tered two teams In the doubles.
Miss Mayme McDonald of Seattle,
holder of the women's championship of
Washington, will not be able to play
this year, cn account of blood poison
ing In her left hand, and Hri. Ellis
of Taeoma will be unable to play, as
she received word to Join her husband
In Chicago.

The Palefaces won their second

test, defeating the Indians in the an
nual game. 7 to 6. The Indians start 2.1
out like winners, piling up six runs
in the first three innings. The Pale
faces tied the score in the fourth in
ning. Charley Lelth of Woodburn,
opened the game with a home run.

the bases, George Bertz of Portland,
tripled and the later scored on an in
field out, tying the score. Barnes
scored the winning run on an infield
