Our domestic turkeys are supposed to be decendants of the wild tut key still found on the American continent. Bronze turkeys are the largest and mnei nonular of all the varieties. They most nearly resemble the wild turkey.! Standard weights are: Adult cock, .ii pounds, ynunil cockerel, 25 pounds; hens, :n founds; pullets, lfi pou-nds. Chicken Hena for Hatching. 11 is -a good plan to use chicken hens to hatch the first clutch of cgR.s a turkey lays because, if broken-up, she will in a week or ten days be lay ing again. Khe may profitably be ue as a mother, when she has laid out her second clutch, since she rerely lays a third. A chicken hen will cover 8 to 10 eKcs; a turkey 18 to 20. It Is generally recommended that the earliest laid eggs he hatched under chicken hens, but that later some tur key mothers be used in order that, if possible, the poults when weaned by the chicken hens be added to the flocks with the turkeV mothers and taught to forape with them, thus making fewer andlarifer bands for the turkey raisers to guard. Turkey prk require 2 to 30 dnys for hatching. The greatest care should he taken to keep the Mttlns; hen free from lice or mites. Io not use sulphur around the nest. It is most essentia! Hint there be no lice On the . young nnult ilnrlniT t he firnt week of their lives. A few llce may either kill them outricht or so weaken them that they succumb to disease. It l generally safest to remote the noults from the net as they hatch bpi HiiNe the-mother will remain on the nest loniter and often the last eg ' do not hatch until from 24 to 30 hours later than the first ones. In very dry 'weather it is a good plan to buiid the Tnest out of grass or straw placed ipon w a. sod turned root-side up, hollowed out bowl-shaped 'and thoroughly soaked . with water. Also to sprinkle tho eggs '- llo-htlv with water at from 90 to 100 " degrees about the 20th day of Incu batlon. Car of the Poults. .When the last egg has hatched re move all the noults to a warm, fla.vnel- .. lined basket out of sight and sound of ' the mother hen. Feed and water her and let her move about for a abort time. Then remove mother and rmlts to & clean new coop with a sruall grass runway made of 12-Inch boards. If " the ground la colds and damp tne coop . aHnulri hay a board floor; If not. let h itttl noults 15ve upon the ground from the start, but move coop and run way upon fresh soil at least every other day. Feed the poults for the firs- time ; when they are from 24 to 30 hours old. ; Several rations are given below, any one of which will doubtless prove sat isfactory, but the following directions all successful turkey breeders sub- scribe to: 1. Do not change from one ra'ion to another. Select your method of feed ing md. stick to it. 2. Feed very little, always leaving i the poults a little hungry. 3. Fed often; the first ten day once in two hours. 1 4. Give no sloppy food. -.- .5. In a natural state young t-keys v - live upon files, spiders, grasshoppers, grubs, snails, worms, eggs', etc.. to . gether with seeds and berries. Little turkeys need more animal food than little chicka and hard boiled egg and . milk are the best substitutes for tlies, bugs. etc. 6. Dry corri meal will swell 'rn their v crops; fement. and kill them. Use Cracked corn meal sparingly while - poults are young and always cald V ' bf ora feediniz. J, Remember you must build a large frame, big organs, much muscle, heavy . plumage; therefore feed build ers, not fats. 8. As soon as the poults Jump over 12-inch boards allow them range. They need exercise to have healthy livers, but never allow them to rang over FOR URKEY RAISERS 2. This ts but a amall thing, hut it saves the milk and promotes sanitation. BaUatiha Will Kelp. The many bulletins published by d'ffarent experiment stations and t'n-j government will help the poultry man in his work of making his plant con vcnlent and keeping it sanltajy. Tn the thirty fourth week of the laying contest at Storrs the hens produced 4152 eggs, or 175 more than for the correspond ing week last year. Every one of the five best pens were White Leghorn..: not only this, but P. G. Piatt's birJ from Wallingford, Pa., that won first place, laid 64 eggs, thus equaling tn, record of the "Oregons" in the thirty second week and making the best weekly score for any Leghorn pen , durine- the last three years. W. K Atkinson's pen from WalliYigford, 1 Conn., were second, with ."8 eggs. Oa crest Farm's pen from Southampton Pa, were third, with 57 eggs, whlie A. 'B. Hall. Wallingford, Conn., tte? with Frank R. Hancock, Jacksonville. Vt., for fourtii place, each having a score of 56 eggs. There is, of course, a point beyond which, hens cannot go in the matter of laying eggs. It now looks as if the zenith of production has probably been reached. Large numbers of the heavier breeds have been broody, and this always means at least a tempo rary interruption in the egg yield. Furthermore, some individuals tba: have perhaps never been overenthusi asiic about laying will no doubt be shedding their feathers, and the pro cess of acquiring a new coat nearly alwavs means no eggs. Thus the meal alternated with stale biead dipped in sweet milk and squeezed very dry, then mixed witn naru Doueu egg. After two weeks replace tne steel-cut oat meal by finely crueked wheat and finally by whole wheat. In place of the egg well-cooked, finely chopped liver or lean meat may be fed occasionally. With all these rations it ts most imnortant to feed fresh water, clean. sharp grit, granulated charcoal and j plentifully of finely chopped, tender) grass or dandelion leaves, silng nettle, radish tops, onion tops, lettuce, etc. j rattening' Batlona. Commerce to feed turkeys by the first of October to get them ready for the Thanksgiving market. Feed ::ight and morning only sparingly , the tirst ten days. The principal food ehoul.l Vie whole corn, the older the belter, to avoid bowel trouble. It is the belief that cold weather makes fat turkeys. The real reason is that In a warm fall the ground keeps soft, vegetation lingers and plenty of worms and bugs abound. As a result the turkeys make long forages, eating the worms and bugs. This excessive travel thins them, and walks all their i.oft and fine flesh into tough, stringy muscle. On the other hand, a cold fall, with early frosts and snows, freezes the ground and kille the tugs. The turkeys wander less, loaf around the barnyard, gorge an abundance of grain and put on flesh. Turkeys allowed to run In a patch of field reas will finish off fairly well with a night feed of wheat or corn. If turkeys are fed on a grain ration of equal parts of oats, barley snd corn, mixed'wlth table scraps, boiled cat rots, potatoes and milk, a meat is prodmeed that is extremely plump and white. A little suet mixed toward the end of the season will materially aid, plso. Another good fayeninR ration is ground oat 3 moistened with skim milk and a little mutton fat added every day. Still another is equal pal . s of corn meal and srround barley mixed with boiled potatoes or boiled ruta bagas. All mashes should be mixed soft but not sticky and when fed, grit and chai coal should be supplied. X I "Farmer" Smith Growing Out of Experience. Here are two or three of suggestions he threw out to in farm lands: Get land values down to where the man can use the profit. the many the dealer the poirt land at a Don't value location too high. Don't spend too much on advertising. JJou't discount the future too much. T) business on the conditions anJ facts as they exist tmlay. Don't sell a man more land than he can use. Don't persuade a man to put all of his money into land so that he hai none left for development expenses. Learn to know dirt. A thorough knowledge of the different kinds of dirt will be of tremendous value. Members of the fMl DOKR B. KSASKY A CO REAL KSTATK Oregon.
