By Hyman II. Cohen. There la an lnalatent call from Tsrlon In terests of the Pacific northwest fjr tbe taking of immediate steps to abut off entirely im portation of California potatoes. The finding of so much tuber moth stock here of late In tbe ahlpmenta of potatoes from various California diatrlct. has caused al most the entire trade to demand restrictive meaenree. Both Oregon and Washington atate authori ties are being called upon to protect the pot to Industries of tbe Pacific northwest. Idaho haa already taken a btwid in the matter and no further ahlpmenta from California will be allowed to enter that state. Various Intereits cow expresa tbe opinion that decisive action should be taken at once by Oregon and Wash ington because unless all act together, the protection afforded the lnauatrr would not be complete. That tuber moth haa not already ruined the potato Industries of Oregon, Idaho, and Wasb li.gton it mere matter of luck and not due to any apeclal precautlona taken by the au thorities. The latter have done their duty as far aa lies in their power, but It Is Im possible for tbem to examine every potato aUpped In from tbe south, or even every sack. I nlrss the former Is done some of tbe tuber moth stock Is likely to slip through the lines and the Industry placed In great danger.
