Miss Suffrage Party immediately lost Interest in his suit. Hammond boasted that Republicans i would protect the bride, "by force of arms, and not by mere words." If she j would but yield her hand and votes. ' Ho painted in glowing words the man i Uness of the Republican party, but ; dodged a pre-nuptial contract. But all in vain. Cheered by the chilly reception given the proposals of his hated rivals. Dud- ley Field Malone, collector of the port of New York, sougrht to rush the young i iady to a hasty pledge to Democracy ' and Woodrow Wilson, Chicago, June 7. (U. P.) Chicago blew all its records straight up through a gloomy atmospnere to the j last spot on the far side of the sky today, as the greatest crowd that ever packed, Jammed and smashed its way down old Boul Mich, shoved along to four big conventions. Whis kers and silken gowns swished alter nately on the lake breezes and the throngs moved to the Republican. Progressive or either of the two suf frage meetings that brought more than 100,000 visitors to town. From 9:30 in th morning, when the doors to the Coliseum opened, until o'clock in the afternoon when a suffrage parade was scheduled, the streets along the lake front were packed from curb to curb. A gloomy drizzling rain eliminated most of the brilliance of the scene. Overcoats ari slickers were in order. But despite the rain, suffrage leaders said 30.000 v.-ould be in line for the cause this afternoon if they had to swim. All hotel corridors were filled with shouting presidential boomers and campaign directors. The bars did a rushing business, thirsty ones lining up four deep. Society colonies from all parts of the country moved to Chicago for the spectacle. Grand dames and tea sip p?ng "flappers" wearing the latest gowns, breezed the boulevards to oc cupy boxes at the convention. Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt, Mrs. j Nicholas Longworth, Mrs. Stanley Mc- j CDrmick of Boston, Mrs. Marshall Field and the Brazilian ambassador and his wife, the beautiful Mme. Da ' Garni, were a few of the arrivals from . the east. ! Rome, June 7. 1. N. S. Alffng the Posina-Astlco lln during a lieavy storm on fho night the 6th, the Austrlans again launched numerous infantry masses? supported by artillery fire of all calipers against our Monte Glove and Morjte Braziono positions.
