BAPTIST UNION Last Thursday the Baptist youns people of Portland had the pleasure Of entertaining their general secretary, Dr. James A. White of Chicago. rally was held at the White Temple on Thursday evening, at which Dr. W'hlte was tho principal speaker. Mrs. I-Idker Burton of CorvalUs and presi dent of the Oregon union, presided at the meeting. Dr. White is making a 16ur of the nation in the interests of young people's work. Harley K. llallgren. president of the iocal unjon, is attending the northern Baptist convention In Minneapolis aJ a delegate from Oregon. The Oregon union is forming plans to Bfnd a large delegation to the twenty-fifth anniversary meeting "f the B. Y. P. U. of America, to be held In Chicago early In July. Plans are also being made to be well represented at the fifth annual Pacific coast con vention at Spokane during the latter part cf July. tTh societies of Portland and nearby towns will hold their third annual ' picnic at Gladstone park on May 30. . General Chairman Ed C. Clfer is pre- J paring a unique program. , ' The B. Y. P. U. of the city is co operating with Rer. Walter Duff of Tabernacle Baptist church in holding ramp meetings at Creston. During the coming week it is Intended to move the ' meetings to LInneman station. The union will grve a trip to Larch mountain on May 23 and 30. This will be given as the regular annual outing. Miss Bailey is in charge. Par ticulars will be given out during the coming week. EPW0RTH LEAGUE Demand for the gospel teams Just recently organized is. growing rapidly. Meetings have been held In the Park-roae,- Brentwood, Clinton Kelly and Epworth churches, and calls are on hand from many other places, some of : 'which axe- out of the city. The team will also furnish a male Quartet, which will render special . number on the afternoon program. The first Sunday In June a team will visit Irvington church and assist the pastor in the evening service. The Presidents' association met in Central church on Tuesday evening. .Resolutions were adopted condemning the change of attitude of the Telegram with regard to prohibition, and a com mittee was appointed to arrange for a float for the Rose Festival parade. .' CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR Today and tomorrow the convention of the Marlon County Christian En deavor union is In session at Silverton. Marion county has the second largest organization In the state. Representa tives from, the ma.lortty of 30 chapters I arp in session and are planning their t work for the coming year. The two im- : portant things before the convention ar the campaign for millions and the 1917 stat convention. The share in the campaign for mil lions for Marion county is fiOli new numbers, 600 new converts. fiOO new church members, BOO new dollars for missions, 600 new peace advocates, 400 quiet hour comrades. S3 C. E. World subscriptions, 85 new "Tenth Legionaries," 100 new C. E. experts, 35 new life work recruits and 16 new so cieties. It is expected that the mem bers will accept these goals and plan to see that they are reached leforc .Inly, 1917. Messrs. Carrick, Kelk . Baker and Spraguo are attending the convention from Portland. The next Oregon state convention will be held in Salem on February 16-18, 1917. The Portland union has definitely decided to have its annual river excur sion again this year. The date will Probably be Monday. June 26. On June 12 the semi-annual execu tive committee meeting will take place. At this meeting the Portland union officers for the coming year will be elected. Each society is entitled to one vote, but everyone is invited to attend. All Day Rally Tuesday. On Tuesday there will be an all day session of the Woman's association at tho First Presbyterian church house. But the great need of every church is a Barnabas, who can discover men to the church's task. Every church has much talent going to waste because unconsecrated to definite tasks. Happy the man, mediocre though he seem, who can fit men in the right places, and infuse them with faith in their ability to do the work to which (jod thus calls them. " f ; - - w . - EPISCOPAL: DIOCESE CONVENTION TO BE - HELD COMING WEEK Resolution to Change System of Voting One of Features; Program Is Announced, The twenty-eighth annual conven tion of the Episcopal diocese of Ore gon will be held 1n St. Stephen's pro cathedral. Thirteenth and Clay streets, Wednesday and Thursday. An important resolution to be intro duced in convention will be one pro posing to change the system of voting,- with a view to saying time and avoiding confusion. The opening service will be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday. The bishop's an nual address will take the place of the tsermon. The business session will begin at noon, when the convention will organize. Lunch will be served at 1: p. m. At 2:30 p. m. the business session will be continued. Thursday holy communion will be celebrated at 7:80 and 9 a. m. The business session will begin at 10:30. Parkinson to Speak. Springfield, Or., May 20. The thir teenth annual convention of the Eu gene district of the Epworth League opened a three days' session here last night with approximately 100 delegates in attendance from Lane, Linn and Douglas counties. Dr. Parkinson of Eugene will preach the convention sermon in his own church on Sunday morning. Men's Brotherhood Chooses Officers On Monday night, in the parlors of the First Congregational church, the j Brotherhood gave a very unique enter- j talnment and dinner, having as their guests of honor Dr. and Mrs. W. M. j Zumbro of Madura, Turkey. The din ner was cooked and served by the men. F. E. Mangold had charge of the cul inary department and M. Walton of the dining room. Both had most able assistants. This was the annual "In dies' Night" of the Brotherhood, and closed their meetings for the year. The following men were elected as officers for the ensuing year: (J. S. Riddle, president; L". T. Stretcher, vice president; .1. R. Martin, secretary treasurer. The speaker of the evening was Dr. Zumbro, president of the American college at Madura, India, who was in Portland on his return to his work in Madura, after some months spent in America. Dr. Zumbro told of the political sit uation in India and of the results of tne work tn his institution which is the only college, under the American board, offering Students the collegiate courses.
