THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND,' FRIDAY, . APRIL 21, 1916. PARTY REGULARITY IS URGED BYT; E. BURTON, SEEKING NOMINATION .Candidate for the Presidency c; From Ohio Is Warmly Re ceived by Large Gathering, BALPH COLE APPEALS President McCourt of Orsffon .puB- llcsn Club at BCss" Xsstlns; M "OMo't Favorite Boa." Theodore E. Burton, former United States senator from Ohio, told a crow'd . which, last night filled the auditorium of th'e Masonic temple why, ln his opinion, the Democratic administration should be beaten in the November' election. ;-; After he had concluded, Ralph Cole, former representative in congress from that state and one of the G. O. P. spellbinders in the campaign of 1912, 'made an appeal to the Republican vot ers of Oregon to send their delegates to the national convention instructed to support Miator Burton for the pres idential nomination. Senator Burton said not a word about his own can didacy. Given, Hearty Reo.ptlon. Introduced by President McCourt, of the Oregon Republican club, as "Ohio's favorite son" Senator Burton received : a -'Warm reception from his auditors, , many of whom were women. Mr. Mc Court in bis introductory remarks also referred to Senator Burton as "having , demonstrated in congress his great friendship for the Columbia river and - the Columbia river basin" and went on to say that few men in the United , States know so much as Senator Bur ton about the capabilities of the river. Urges Party Organization. Senator Burton started by strongly urging party regularity" on the He- : publicans of Oregon, telling them that party organization is absolutely neces sary and that in electing Democrats to Office they are doing serious injury to the principles for whicn they, as Re publicans, stand, lie predicted defeat of the Democratic administration in November, saying that "Democratic ad ministrations are always ushered in with shouts, and out, four years later, With a universal sigh of relief." Wants Sigh Tariff, lie used all the stock arguments in favor of a high protective tariff and predicted that after the war the Eu ropean nations may nationalize their industries in a desperate effort to re habilitate themselves, making it im- . perative that a high tariff will be built ' around the United States. They will be. he said, "like lean kine in parcned pas u res gazing into fields of clover, '"America. We must remember that we are for America first." The speaker next assailed the admin istration as one of broken pledges and promises, referring particularly to re peal of. free tolls through the Panama canal for American coastwise shipping and the single, term plank. The Demo crats, he declared, had promised to re duce the cost of living but had merely made it harder "to produce the cost of living." He attributed the rapid rise of prices during Republican administrations to . the fact that the world's visible sup ply of gold doubled between 1890 and 1915. " Explains Sigh Price. The high cost of living he attributed largely to the demand for luxuries, drawing a comparison between the con veniences and amusements when he was a boy and those of the present time. 1 "In advocating a tariff commission and repealing the free sugar provision the Democrats seem to be flopping over to our principles," he said; "but don't trust them. They are liable to flop back again." Senator Burton recalled the tempor ary use of 'the Vreeland-Aldrich cur rency law under the Democratic ad ministration despite the fact Its en actment met vehement Democratic op position and said that It had been made the cornerstone of the federal reserve law now in force. Diplomatic appointments made by the Wilson administration were crit icized on the ground that trained di plomats did not get the appointments. The foreign policy of the government was denounced as vacillating and spineless, and the administration was accused of changing sides on the sub , marine issue, thus bringing on the present acute crisis which might have been avoided. Senator Burton insisted, had a Blaine. a Hay or a Root been secretary of state." The speaker referred to Bryan as the "secretary of peace," who had resigned because the president's preparedness .program was too strenuous while Sec retary of War Garrison had quit be cause It was not vigorous enough. He accused the administration of having no-adequate preparedness program. Saps Mexican Policy. . "The "vacillating and uncertain" policy of the administration was blamed for the present muddle In Mex ico, the speaker vehemently insisting that it was the government's duty to : see that American lives and property in Mexico were protected "and not to meddle and fuss with the Internal af fairs of the country, leaning first to Villa and then Carranza, who, after being recognized, hasn't recognized us to any extent." ; $10,000 Necklace Figures in Law Suit - Missouri Jewelry Firm Suss Mrs. Z,e- onia Mane of Walla Walla, for Hal sacs on Goods Purchased la 1911.
