The mailing of the Republican candidates' pamph lets to the registered voters of Ore gon was commenced Thursday by Sec retary of State Olcott. As the voters' names are. secured from weekly lists furnished by the county clerks under the law and registration books closed In th counties April 18, it. will re quire" some days ror the clerks to . collect the final registrations from the precinct registers and .prepare and . forward lists to the secretary's office and - the mailing of the pamphlets cannot be completed for 10 days or two weeks. Should any of the registration lists b delayed "for any reason. Secretary of State Olcott says he will continue to mail the pamphlets up to such ' time before election as will allow for the delivery of the same to the voter by ordinary mail. The pamphlets contain only the names of candidates for election or nomination at the primary election . who have submitted statements and -portrait cuts for publication and paid the prescribed charges, ranging from ' $10 to $100. As the mailing of. the pamphlets was commenced earlier this year than at any time heretofore, and as th registrations now close SO days be fore the election, instead of 15, as before, under ordinary conditions the publication should be In the hands of the registered voters In ample time before election. v Insurance Company Files. Salem, Or., April 21. The Agency company of Utah, engaged in writing and soliciting insurance, capita stock I200-.000, was admitted to do business in Oregon Thursday by CommiFftioner Sehulderman. The company will have its principal Oregon office in Port land. Articles of incorporation were filed by the Moore Mill & Lumber company of Bandon, S. E. Pearce, P. R. Walker and N. Y. McKanna. incor porators, and Dunthorpe Maintenance corporation, Dunthorpe, capital stock $500. Dissolution certificates were filed by the Paper Interfolding company of Oregon City and the Golden Rod Mill ing company. Alleges Inhuman Treatment. Salem, Or., April 21. Alleging cruel and Inhuman tratement, Emma Treesh has brought suit for divorce against George J, Treesh. They were mar ried in 1913. Studies Hospital Conditions. Salem, Or.., April 21. Superintend ent Keller of the Western Washington hospital for the Insane at Steilacoom, pent two days here this week study ing methods employed at the Western Oregon hospital for the insane. E. O. Edgerton Is 111. Berkeley, CaU, April 21. (P. N. S.) E. O. Edgerton, member of the state railroad commission, is confined to his home here today by an attack of diphtheria. He was taken ill Wednes day while at work in the commission's offices in San Francisco. Ban Francisco Trade Excursion. Marshfield, Or April 21. Word has been received here that the San Fran .claco Chamber of Commerce will run s a trade excursion to Coos bay about September 15, returning the last of the ,'. month. . FALLS Trout Fishing : Picks Up Everywhere With Clearing of Water, Salmon fishing at Oregon City has come into Its own at last. During the past several days hundreds of chin ooks have been landed by Portland anglers. The fish jtre running good, and If the sunny ' weather continues Sunday will probably be the best .day of the season. Fishing at Shipherd's Springs is re ported to be very good. Henry R. Everding and Ed Morris of Portland, landed 78 trout and Dr. F. M. Hurd caught 39. Robert Wetberall has had fine success in trout fishing near the falls. J. H. Erickson caught a 26-. pound steelhead. The upper fork of the Deschutes river Is available for trout fishing now. A party of Culver anglers, using worms, landed 31 fine red sides early this week. Crooked river fish ing is good. Spinners are being used In the north fork of the Washougal river with great success. One catch of 69 was reported. The sport is reported to be very good at Scappoose. Jahn. wealthy dealer in real estate. Insurance and rentals, cam Thursday when he applied for a divorce. Jahn, a bridegroom of 25 days, has learned, he says, that he was sought for his kind and loving nature, not at all, but for his riches. Furthermore, he was horrified to learn that his young and charming bride smokes cigarettes, he says, and parades the halls of their apartments with other girls, dressed only In nighties, a kimona and slippers. In an ef- j rort to check sales of alcohol by drug gists, the city council has decided to publish each week a list of purchasers, the amount bought and ths store from which purchased. This was recom mended by the police committee, who declared that 86 out of 33 drunks ar rested this month were Intoxicated from drinking alcohol. The druggists declare they are willing to cooperate, but assert there are physicians who issue prescriptions after they have turned applicants down. O. A. C. After Hay ward. University of Oregon, Eugene, Or.. April 21. University students are aroused today over the appearance of an "authentic" letter in the. Emerald from a student with "inside dope" stat ing that unless something is done hur riedly. Trainer "Bill" Hay ward would not be with Oregon long. The letter substantiates a rumor that Oregon Ag ricultural college was seeking the serv ices of the head of athletics at Oregon. According to the statement, O. A. C has made Hayward an offer of $270 per year as compared with the $2000 salary that he is receiving at Oregon. Although non-committal on the mat ter, Hayward smiled at the question when It was thrust at him at last nleht's pep-fest and refused to talk of the matter. A movement has been started at Ore gon to retain the services- of Hayward, who has been the head of all sports at Oregon for the past 13 years. Woodland Signs New Twirler. Ridgefleld, Wash.. The eel worm, a death-dealing pest, hereto fore unknown in the Hood River Val ley, was discovered this week infesting the strawberry plants and killing the plant by destroying Its root fibers. The new pest feeds only upon the roots and causes a knotty condition that com pletely saps the plant. The eel was first discovered In berry plants that were being set. The origin of the new peet is a mystery. The local experi ment station states hat the only way to get rid of the eel is by clean culti vation of the ground for a period of at least two years. If crops are full the Hood River strawberry crop will. total 125 carloads this year. Catholic Fathers Transferred. Hood River. Or April 21. Father Roman, who has had charge of the mis sionary work of the Catholic church In the Hood River territory, has been as signed to take charge of the Hood River church.
