payers of Benton county, sls well as
those of several other counties of the
, valley, are lookine forward to the
7 meeting: of the county taxpayers"
league to be held at the court house in
this city Saturday of this week.
It is the mail) purpose of this meet
Ins to present the proposition of or
ganizing a state league of taxpayers
, and have It ratified. Many of the val-
f.ley counties bave organizations, some
of them long in existence, but little
iu Deen 'accomplished in the way of
lowering taxation, for as single organ
izations they can do little.
County Unite to Be Merged.
The proposition Is to form a state
organization and merge the county
units into the tig order and in this
way it la thought there will be a me
dium of strength to Influence the legis-.ie-ture.or
to initiate legislation to abol
ish many of the boards, offices and
commissions.
The meeting will be an all day ses
sion and representatives of many of
the counties of the Willamette valley
are expected. Committees appointed at
the January meeting, taking up ail de
partments of county management, as
j well as state legislation, have been
digging Into public matters, and they
will make their reports. There are

There will be five speakers: Judge
Bruce McKnight of Linn county; Rob
ert E. Smith, editor of the Tax Liber
ator of Roseburg; Attorney L. G. Lew
ellen of Albany; Senator Vinton of

Albany.

In the early part of May to effect a
State organization and If the proposal
Is favored the matter of whether it
will be advisable to attempt initiative
legislation this fall will be discussed.
A large attendance is expected at the
meet'ng Saturday.

Two soldiers of the United States
army were fatally injured and three
others painfully hurt late yesterday
when an ambulance from the Let
terman Generrl hospital at the Pre
sidio crashed into a municipal street
car on the Union street line at Scott
and Lombard streets.
The ambulance, a new $5000 machine,
was demolished by the force of the col
llsslon, the street car was smashed In
at the side and several passengers on
the car narrowly escaped injury.

strange currency method, because all

'They now have a kopeck bill, worth

have ten-Kopeck pieces in perforated
sheets like postage stamps."
