The motorist suffering an -acute attack of "spring fever." with the de- v lr to get out on the roads, need not - try to repress that feeling any longer. Z Practically every road radiating from ' Portland will he found to be In sur- & prlslagly gooff condition, and only the ; heaviest kind of a rain -will loosen It up enough to make trouble. First hand KiL information, was collected on some of 1 J I . 1 - 111. :. luBiq uuriiig i lie weeK, vniie repon wo omsrs' report rair conditions. The Journal' own road service can assure, the motorist of a very interest ing trip down the Columbia river high way- as far : aa Oeer island, with re ports Indicating that the road is In excellent shape as far as Goble. One of the new Chalmers six 40s was taken on a speedy Jaunt down the river early In the week, and mile after mll of the road showed up quite dry and in- excellent driving shape, with the exception of a few miles between the Multnomah county line ana Scap poose, where a "very little work would make traveling a little smoother. Afternoon's Drive Pleasant. This road offers the rnotorisf a very ir pretty afternoon's : driving through I some of the most beautiful lowland scenery that can be bad. First, it is "down the shore of the Willamette, passing some of Portland's biggest fac- 5 tories. Then, as the business makers are - left behind, green hills on the left an3 the Willamette on the right unfold a panorama of variety which gradually changes to the broad pattern of the islands and sweeping bends of the river, where it Joins the Columbia. i The tall and stately cottenwooda : over on the Sauvies island, with the first inkling of spring showing on an ' occasional limb, bring prospects of i many a pleasant party to be held under ? the trees, where Chief Multnomah once J counseled his warriors. $ 4 Jolting Quickly rorgotten. i .Several miles of this kind .of coun try, generously artudded with prosper- i ou looking -truck gardens and other I tangible signs of Oregon s rural pros I perity, pass while rolling over some of i Multnomah county's better class of roadway. Then come a few miles of earth and gravel road that could stand some at tention, but the view of the Columbia on the few miles of road beyond St. Helens and on the way to Deer Island make the bit of Jolting hardly worth mentioning, in view of the greater pleasures that -come as the reward of1 the trip. On, the return the motorist can branch off at Claremont. take the ferry to St. Johns, and take an evening turn r over the Willamette boulevard, coming down Mississippi to Larrabee and the , Broadway bridge. , V The hill past the Forestry building "I Is not yet Improved, and for some time to come the "way to reach the IA anton road, will be to turn off Thurman at Twenty-fourth, going down the latter street to the end of the pavement, and thence left to the XJnnton road. Easy driving snouia mue u jaunt about-a three or four hour drive, a round trip gof about 70 miles. - ' J A Msny&vim'mir-mimip!'- n 4a ' ' 0:'jW"m ' 7k if ' i If ? ? The contractor claims that a reclassifies C tlon of some of the work will show A. title to a larger sum. The state ap f f propriated $30,000 for the section. - Will Advertise Highway. " County Will Cooperate, Eight 'thou sand dollars will be diverted out -of the Jackson county state road appro priation for' 1916 for the purpose. of cooperating with the federal' govern ment In making a survey for. a paved highway from Medford to Crater lake. The federal engineers will make the survey. Want Wider . Pavement Accord ing to the Weston Leader that section of Umatilla county will oppose tho proposed $980,000 bond issue. The obf Jectlon seems to be, not so much against bond issues, but because of the opinion that the proposed Issue, as ten tatively apportioned will not be suffi cient to complete the work. There is also opposition to an eight foot pave ment, if being claimed that 18 feet would be none too wide, and that 16 feet is absolutely essential. Petition Xs Being- Signed. A peti tion is being generously signed ' in Clatsop county to accept the proposi tion of Contractor Oiler to improve the four and one-half mile strip of highway on Clatsop plains with a hard surface pavement to the full width of 16 feet instead of nine feet already contracted for. Washington's Road Commissioner Out Owing to dissatisfaction with state road work In Washington, State High way Commission Roy . has resigned. His successor has not yet been ap pointed but It has been indicated that he will be succeeded by Chief Engineer Allen. It has been charged that there has been great waste and. Inefficiency in the conduct -of the road department. Another element in the situation is the right between paving promoters. Big Tire Company Holds Convention With the idea of getting a service department which means greater sat Isfactlon to the customer and helos a tire make good to the utmost, the Firestone Tire company held a con vention which ended yesterday at Ak ron, Ohio. Portland users of that make of tire will receive the benefit: of the fac tory's educational campaign through the representation of the Portland service department. O, T. McFad den, manager of the local department, will return Wednesday to put into ef fect the findings of the men from all over the United State. Most tire factories have annual con vention of their sales managers and district managers, but it has been dis tinctively a Firestone idea to educate the men of the service departments along the broadest lines. These' conventions are expected to bring out the many little things which applied to tire practice means addi tional mileage and .greater service. F. W. Thatcher, local Firestone man ager, who has been touring the ter ritory, has Just returned and finds a growing market all over the state. "The talk of many new industries down the valley Is booming every thing," says Mr. Thatcher. "So many outsiders are around the towns that it is almost impossible to get & room In some of the valley cities. There certainly is much to look forward to." COOS ROAD SYSTEM No Route-Should Be Definite ly, Fixed, Engineer . Says, V Until Douglas Makes Plans DISAGREE ABOUT BRIDGE Keeommeudatloa for Viaduct Three Miles Trom Coquine Ho Approved by the People of Couuins. After making a reconaissanace sur vey of Coos county. Deputy Highway Engineer Cantlne has recommended a tentative plan of road Improvement to the county court. The routes he ad' vised are as follows: From the Curry county line to Bandon; Bandon to Co quine or a snort distance west of Co- quille; from there to Coos Bay; a road north from the bay to the Douglas county line via Tenmile; one or two ferries from North Bend to Kentuc inlet and North inlet completion of the road from Glasgow to connect with the Templeton highway. In discussing the, eventual highway between Coos county and the interior he recommend ed that no road should be defined until It was ascertained what Douglas coun ty will do. The Myrtle Point road; to Roseburg, he said, was preferable to the Coos Bay wsgon road, and thought eventually the routing would go by way of the Umpqut river.- He also recommended that no road should be hard surfaced until after fill have settled two years at least Judge John F. Hall, president of the Coes County Good Roads association. has indorsed the recommendation of the roads to be improved, saying that the scheme outlined by Mr. Cantlne was what he had. been scheming foe the past 10 years. , - The proposition of Mr. Cantlne to bridge the CoqufUe river two or three miles from Coquille la not approved by the resident of that city, who claim that the only place for a bridge is at Coquille , While in Coquille county, it Is re ported that Mr. Cantlne expressed the opinion that at the next legislature the state highway department would be taken from the jurisdiction of - State Engineer Lewis and made independent once more, with Mr. Cantlne in charge. Engineer Is Turned : Down by Commission Olendal Win Vat 8s Xeft Oft to One Bide by Proposed Oat Oft in Boas las Ooaaty. The state highway commission has rejected the recommendation of the state engineer relative to the location of the Pacific yiilghway in Douglas county. The state engineer and ad visory board recommended a cutoff. which would leave 'Glendaie ff"Hs highway a distance of two miles. The cost of the cutoff was estimated at $61,000. The plan was objected to by the residents of Glendale. The recom mendation of the state engineer was based on the argument that the cutoff would ultimately be the permanent route and that the distance saved i would more than, offset the difference in cost when it came to hard surfac ing the highway.
