THE OREGON -DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND, SATURDAY, MARCH 4, 1916. ICON'S GREATEST CROP IS POULTRY .mounts to Sum That Would Pay for Several Large Battleships TIMELY SUGGESTIONS FOR POULTRY RAISERS By James Dryden. rofessor of Poultry Husbandry at o. a. c. The seed is being sown now Tor ext year's crop. I mean, of course te egg and chicken crop a crop In regon alone that amounts to a sum krRe enough to pay for two or three .ttleships a year. . By sowing the seed Is not meant he planting of eggs in the soil that ill grow up and produce other eggs. ut sowing them under the setting eri and in the incutr.tor the eggs used t this reason of the year for the pur- !cae of reproductijn reproducing te pedes as well as for human food. The productive life of the egg layer f 'hort ay about two years ior rciit. She t not a perpetual motion Mechanic. She will live to a ripe old ge, but she does not improve with ge or experience, unlike some Vid ians. Experience may bring her wis- om but it does not bring more eggs. rhe successful poultryman under- tanda this and replants the old hens rith pullets. Two years, on the av rage. Is long enough to keep them. peciat breeding stock, however, may e kept longer at a profit. We are trying at the experiment tation to breed up strains of layers f greate.- laying longevity; hens that fill lay profitably three and four ears Instead of two, but that will ake time if it can be done, and I tfitnk from oar results eo far it tan e done. It is a question of breeding. If hens an be bred to lay proritamy lour ears instead of two It would enmi ate a great many troubles of the oultryman and add to his profits. The hatching season is on and tho llze of the erg crop next year will De determined largely try the kind of wori don in March and April by tho pdul' mau. It is not Just a question of setting; an egg; tt is a question of setting the right kind of egg and set ting It at the right time. No, the moon hasn't anything to do with It, nor have thunder storms. It is immaterial whether the chick when it reaches ehickenhood kicks or pecKs its way out of its sbJll, but it is very important that the chick be born or hatched with a kick, for it is tne kick ing chick that grows up into tae kicking, scratching hen that lays the moat eggs. The kick comes to the chick through the egg from the par ents and grandparents, and it is im portant that the seed the eggs that are to produce Che next chicken crop be laid by good laying hens, mated to males from good laying hens. Another - important point the pul let requires a certain period of time to . i . . . i . 'T-i t ; . ..... reacn laying inaLum;. i nc umo ies. however, in the different breeds and in individuals and according to methods of care and feeding used in raising them, but in general, under good care, the puilets should be hatched between March 1 and April 20 if a good crop of fall and winter eggs are to be secured. If hatched before the first of March the pullets will likely lay in September and Octo ber and molt and cease laying in No vember and December. If hatched as late as May 1 ney may not lay till December or January. There is no profit in hatching chicks in summer. Not to discourage your Portland back yarders, it is true that pullets that are raised Jn the open country fields Where thev can Chase the grass hopper and scratch in virgin soil are better kickers and therefore better layers than those that grow up :n the city lot. and it is a prc"y good plan for the back yarder to have his coun try cousins do the raising of the pul lets for him. The city is not the place to raise pullets, unless they are raised for the amusement and in struction of the children. A country raised pullet, however, when the reaches maturity may take her piace in the city backyard, proof against the debilitative tendencies of city chicken life and will lay about as well as S left to roam over the country fields. The hens must have good care, how ever. They will not lay if fed only on table scraps, old thoes, tomato pans and graphophonj music. That is another story. Precautions should be taken by every poultry raiser to present crowd ing of hens on their roost, during the colder nights. When they get too close together, hens, like human beings, per spire and loose considerable strength which renders them srubject to cold. The first draught that strikes them is likely to cause trouble. Cleanse and disinfect3 the breeding pens and equipment now. Select the hens to be used for breeders and get them located. These hens should be those that have made good laying rec ords during November, December and January. They should possess" good health and vigor and be of desirable size and shape. If the hens have been in heavy laying, a month of rest from lavlnr will put them in good condition for producing good fertile eggs for hatching. ' Ten to 15 hens can be mated to one rooster, depending on vigor of the male and size and activity of the breed, says C. C. Lamb, extension poultry specialist, Oregon Agricultural col lege. shown that though hens may vary greatly in weight, yet a small hen may lay just as large an egg as a large one. As a matter ol fact, .-tne Mis souri records show that the -hens average 6.75 pounds in weight laid eggs averaging 2.03 ounces while the hens averaging 3.40 pounds In weight laid eggs averaging 2.29 ounces. tie, near Preston, England, 617; Tom and yellow corn seem to cause a deep Barron. It is a good plan to use hens in sec ond or third year of laying mated to males about one year old. Well ma tured pullets and cockerels may be mated if they come from good parents and have good constitutional vigor. However, one is more certain fo breed fromhis best hens if he selects them after finishing pullet year of laying according to egg production. In preparing an incubator for use, there should be some experimenting to determine whether or not it will maintain an even temperature, before the eggs are trusted to its care. When the machine maintains an even degree of heat at-102 for several hours the doors should be opened and the egg chamber allowed to cool to about 85 degrees. If the machine will re turn to an even 102 within tmee hours then it is ready for the eggs. When the cool eggs are put inside, they will cause a drop in the temperature, but when they are heated through, the warmth will return. The males used for breeding should be eons of high laying hens that have made good winter records. Use ' only well matured.- vigorous stock that has never been sick. White Wyahdottes In Lead at Storrs I Storrs, Conn., Feb. 27. Last week's ultra winter weather had its effects on the egg production in the laying contest at Storrs; 15 inches of snow and 15 degrees below zero is by no means the right combination for un locking the eggs. To be sure several pens did remarkably well but taken all together the birds lost nearly 150 eggs as compared with the previous week's production, although they laid more than. 400 eggs better than for the cor responding week two years ago. The-three best pens in each of the principal breeds are as follows: Plymouth Rocks Jules F. Francals (Barred), W. Hampton Beach, L. I., B57: Falrfields Farms (Barred). Short Falls, IN. That was how he became a millionaire. You will say, "That's all very well but I haven't Russell Sage's resources.' Verv true. But you can profit bv observing his methods. BUY WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS SELLING. That was the secret not onlv of Sage's success, but that of- practically every man who has made a fortune with his own hands. Our own Portlanders who bought real estate in the period following the Civil War and reaped fortunes later, wen prices went away up, ioiiowea mis same principle. You have an opportunity right now to do the same thing. Today almost everyone wants to sell. Prices asked for property are con sequently below normal. BUY WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS SELLING. The men and women who have a little spare money in the bank; the trustees and executors of estates; men with surplus funds to invest for air of these, row is an lqeal time to put money in real estate. BUY WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS SELLING. The average man or woman could do no better than to watch the papers for announcements of the occasional purchases made by conservative men who have made money in real estate. When you see such a man has made a purchase, you will be pretty safe in following his lead. Such a purchase, however, should not be made blindly. It is always wise to retain one of Portland's reliable, established real estate men before entering any real estate transaction. Having purchased, have patience. This old world swings back and forth like a pendulum. A period of plentiful money, which means high prices, is approaching. Then will be your time for profit. When that times comes, SELL WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS BUYING. Largest Egg of Season. R. T. Miller, 831 Mississippi avenue, has a Buff Orpington hen that is a whole flock when it comes to egg pro duction.
