All contractu and arrangements have been completed for the erection of the new Overland home in Pan Francisco. on the west! aide of Van Nes avenue, i with a frontage of 120 feet, running from the corner of Bush street south erly to Fern avenue, with a depth of 220 feet. The final -'details were approved by General Manager A. D. Plughoff, of J. IV. Leavitt & Co., on his recent visit to the Overland factory at Toledo. In speaking of the new home. Plug hoff says: fThere seems to be an im pression that the Leavitt Interests have, been merged; with that of the Overland company, from the fact that the Willys-Overland company has pur chased the site of our new home. This, however, isjerroneous, as the Willys Overland coimpany la merely our new landlord. Present Quarters Too Small. "Over a year ago we realized that our present Quartern were not adequate to our volume of business at that time, not considering even the natural In crease we feel that we are to enjoy. Hence we had to look around for mare commodious quarters. "Here wetfound our first stumbling block; lhere;was not a building in ex istence, in Or adjacent to automobile row that was large enough to accom modate us jS found many property o-.vners who were willing to erect struc tures for us; but all such offers were accompanied; by long leases , whlc,h, from the standpoint of good business, could not be? aixf pted. "Our contract with the Willys-Overland company does not run on Indef initely; therefore, we did not think it advisable tofsign any lease that would run beyond - the life of our contract with the Overland factory. '"The offials of the Overland fac tory also ajereciated our situation., as well a.i the growing demand for Over l.uid cars. ;The necessity for larger quarters fop us as coast distributors became so pronounced that the Willys Overland factory decided to purchase the land for our new building. Investment of $4000,000 "The new; building and ground rep resent an investment of over 1400.000, which, by the way. Is a compliment to California, as it shows their faith In the future of business here. "The building will be a six story structure, which will give about 185, OnO square feet. The full width of the first floor running back 100 feet will be devoted to the sales room, with a ?; foot ceiling. At the rear of the sales room Will be a mezzanine floor, on which wifl be located the accounting department. .. The offices of the Willys-Overland company v.-ill be located In this build ing, as well us the home offices of tho executives of the J. W. Leavitt & Co. "The general finish of the fireproof building, while modern, will have as lis chief essential the factor of plenty of light. i Lvitt Company Also to Build. "In keeping with this idea of expan fcion. the Leavitt company has decided on the erection of new quarters in Los .Angeles that will represent an invest ment of $250,000. A new building is also to be erected In Pasadena, costing koine $50,00(4, a $60,000 branch in Oak land, and a'j$100,0u0 branch in Sacra mento. "No changes are contemplated at present in the branch buildings in Se nile. Portland, Spokane, Fresno and san Diego. Permanent Highways Discussed rdscnssing proposed road improve ments in Morrow county, the Heppner Herald pays: The question of a per manent Willow creek h'ghway. extend ing to the Columbia river, with feeders from rar-h of the principal localities. Is a mntter that must, within a short time, he seriously considered by the taxpayers of this county. The only Plan by which these feeders and the main highway can be constructed and put to use liy the present generation is to t)Oiid the county. It is estimated that the cost of building good roads throughout the county would be In the neighborhood of $244, uOO. After a plan is discovered whereby roads could b constructed that would last until the bonds mature, the Herald advocates the issuing of bonds to cover the cost of building this system of roads im mediately and we believe the matter of 244. uOO and Interest yiereon would be saved many times over before the bonds mature. extension of the Columbia river high way at the I'matllla county boundary. This route, that Is being chiefly dis cussed. is from I'endieton to Milton, thence to Klgin through the North Powder valley to Baker cOunty. It Is proposed to make of it a state road, to be maintained by the state. There is considerable opposition to the bonding of the county, and In lieu of this it is suggested that the state tax lftTy for roads be increased, and that the road be constructed by the state. Gerard Shoots Two Deer With One Shot Berlin. Jan. 22. ( I". P.) Out hunt ing today with the American military attache In Berlin. Colonel Kuhns. Am bassador Gerard killed two small deer with one shot, the colonel, on the other hand, fired two shots without hitting a deer! Did Gerard's friends not know that he was an expert-crack-never-mlss-an-a:m rifleman, they would think this an accident, but this Is the second time this winter that Gerard killed two deer with one shot! Today it happened thus: Gerard and the colonel went out to the ambassador's game preserve near Berlin.' Two small deer appeared. Gerard fired at one. The bullet went through its heart, struck a rib. glanced out the side and went through the sec ond deer. More game appeared and the officer took a shot and another shot, but the deer disappeared. On their way home Gerard decided h; would like to bag a duck for dinner because Mrs. Gerard's mother Is visit ing here and likes duck. It was dark. The ambassador spotted one, fired and bagged it. But when he got it home it was too old to eat. "That's what I get for shooting ducks at night." remarked Gerard, smil ' lngly. when he reached the embassy. PROSPERITY IS SPREADING Immense Increase la Hew Tork Clear ings Voted, General Improvement AH Over Country. Firmly believing that today marks the time of greatest value in the av erage motor car, FYed W. Yogi en. president of the Northwest Auto com pany returned to Portland yesterday with a lot of news about factory con ditions, especially as relating to the automobile business. "With factories which desire to get equipment . w ith which to Increase their output and with the steel com panies refusing to take orders for any increase in the supply of steel for auto manufacture, it la safe to say. that next year will see no reduction In the price of cars which have adopted a standard." says Mr. Vogler. "It Is highly unreasonable to expect one. and I am quite positive that we shall see none. Another thing. Is that people are. demanding quality as well as service in a great many makes. That accounts for the fact that sev eral makes show Increased prices In the models of 1916. That is unusual, but not unexpected. Cannot Secure Machinists. That is an Increase of almost 90 per cent over tho sar:ie week last year. Sure sign of Good Times. "The proportion of increase slowly WE DON'T MIND that has been the chief factor in the splendid Reo success. We don't change easily or often so we make less mistakes than others. WE DON'T EXPLOIT our friends so we keep them. We hold as sacred the confidence of Reo buyers and as a result, this industry knows nothing that quite equals the loyalty of the Reo clientele. AND SO WE SAY that this year of radicalism; this year of wild experimenting; this year of confusion will prove to be the Reo Year because it will vindicate as no other year ever has, the Reo policy. IF YOU ARE of an inventive or an adventurous turn, this is a great year to gratify your propen sity for experimenting. BUT IF YOU- ARE one of those more serious minded persons who want value for your every dollar; who buy an automobile for service, not for the stunts it will perform: AND ABOVE ALL if you'd be certain when you draw your check that you are getting the best there is to be had in Simon-pure automobile value and the lowest in maintenance cost then come along with us for this is Reo Year, Northwest Auto Fred W.
