Testimony tending to show the con
nection H. II. Rlddell had with the
operatloiis of the Oregon Inland Devel
opment company was offered in the
federal court thiat mornine by Hiram
S. House, investigator for the United !
Htates attorney's office. House eitld
Riddell, as secretary for the company,
received mot of his pay in office rent
and telephone fees credited on the com

In cross-examination, the defense un
dertook to show that this credit on the
cCmpany'B books was all the compen
sation Rid;lell received as secretary
and attorney.
Mrs. Fannlo Dean, formerly stenog
rapher for the company, was asked by
the government to Identify a letter
written, presumably at the dictation
of Riddeli and typ.d by her. She said
she would not undertake to swear is
to the letter, not remembering it at all
at this time.
Wallace Mct'amant. leading couns'l
for Rlddell. objected to the form of
testimony, declaring that since the pa
pers had been so lonsr. out of the hands
of the company, some enemy might
easily have "planted" such a letter.
Cnited States Attorney Reames souKnt
to help Mrs. Dean identify the exhibit
as her typing and Riddell's dictation
hy various "Internal" features, but she
left the stand still asserting Inability
to identify it positively.
The last of the cases against offi
cers of the company on charges of
using the mails to defraud probably
will go to the Jury late this week.
