THE OREGON-DAILY ' TOUBMAL. ' PORTI.AKn. MOMnAV. DECEMBER 27, IMS. - . - y- V 7- GRIPPING FILM PLAY TAKEN FROM STORY OF CANADIAN WOODS Frank Campeau Is Outstand ing Figure in Drama at P.nllimhlP' Pana Thrllle UUIUMIUIU) iuw IIIIIIIOI Frank Campeau, who played Trampaa In "Tfc Virginian," and. If memory eerves rightly, the Mexican the original production of "Arizona," is the outstanding figure In an absorbing photoplay. "Jordan Is a Hard Road." at the Columbia. "Jordan Is a Hard Road" Is taken from Sir Gilbert Parker's story of the Canadian woods and is a drama with o skillful occasional blending of scrip tural allegory a fleeting glimpse of the hard road to Jordan. i Co-stars with Camp'-au are the in imitable Dorothy Gish and Owen; Moore. Campeau is seen as a bad man with a heart who reforms for the sa!e of his daughter, keeping from her his bandit past. Jailed for his misdeeds the hi!rh ayman gives his Infant girl (Dorothy Gish) to a friend with an admonition never to reveal the true character of , her father. i Tears later, drawn by father love, he comes back and. impelled by th fervor of a religious meeting at which the girl plays and sins. resolves to live aright. His struggle is a hard one, but he manages it, still keeping , the- girl In Ignorance of her parent- j hood. The girl falls in love with a young ; Englishman who needs J5',000 to se- ' cure an option on a valuable mine. Tho reformed father promises the monay, but holdup men rob the local bank, i For the sake of the girl and her lover . Campeau turns robber again. He re- j covers the money, but receives a mor tal wound in performing the Job. i He crawls home and cleverly fak"s 1 an accidental shooting In his office, deceiving the girl and the Englishman Into thinking ha ha3 been shot in cleaning a revolver. He dies happy j without revealing his true identity to his daughter. ' ' A Keystone comedy featuring Fatty Arbuckle playing horse with a galaxy of proariway stars, which includes Willys Collier, Sam Bernard and Weber & Fields, is shown as a laugh provoker. Theda Bara Stars In Majesties Film Emotional Actress Cilf Attraction la 8 tin-lag Drama, In Which Strlf. Be tTMn Capital and Labor Is Depleted. Theda Bara in a stirring drama. "De struction," is the attraction which the Majestic theatre is offering this week. It is a story of the battle of labor and capital, augmented by intrigue and moral depravity. In which the success of the better element Is the only re deeming feature. The story Is laid In a mining town. Miss Bara. as Ferdinande, succeeds in anaring the owner of the mine, but de velops an enemy In her husband's grown son, who. while at college, had occasion to know what she was. The elder man develops heart trou ble. His wife already has started an Intrigue with the manager of the mill, expecting to so combat her husband's eon that he will be left penniless. To hasten the father's death, a strike is called. The elevating Influence in the plot is furnished by the son, who, despite the efforts of the plotting woman, succeeds in ending the strike, but is compro mised by his stepmother and temporar ily displaced from his father's good graces. The plotters celebrate victory too soon, however, and are caught. Those in the intrigue perish In a fire in the house in which they are cele brating. A Mutual illustrated weekly and mu sic by a stringed orchestra, recently added to the attractions, complete thi bill. Naval Militia to Be j Inspected Tonight!
