I: R) Persons with & distaste for carnage are being- warned here today not to attend the hockey game between the Portland Rosebuds and the Seattle Met ropolitans tomorrow night. From what is known of4ks style of play of the two teams the local arena is going to be no proper placa for the nervous or timid fans. Indications are that the game will be no molly coddle affair. Ttie Red Cross is making preparations to car for the wounded. Both the Seattle and Portland clubs play hockey of the slam-bang variety. While skill is not lacking in the play of either team there is also no paucity of vigorous, aggressive action and a certain amount of "rough stuff," enough to add spice to the exhibition, is expected. Portland and Seattle are In a tie for first place In the Pacific Coast Hockey association, standing and this fact certainly is not going to lessen the determination of each team to win. The Methopolitana expeot a hard game but they also expect a victory. Mght Films Can't Be Shown. Washington. Dec. 13. (U. P.) Who would have thought that "T'n Spoilers" was a roaring farce comedy? But. shorn of a few gun fights, fist fights, legal fights and gambling bouse bouts, that is just what it is in the interpretation given by the Baker playerg this week. Edward Woodruff as Roy Glenister, the Alaskan gold hunter, put up ths most convincing stage fight yet seen here, when he demontsrated the cele brated 'hammerlock' on Will Lloyd, w ho took the part of McNamara, the claim Jumping politician. Woodruff got- a scissors hold on Lloyd and hurled him over a table a la Frank Gotch. Then he grabbed his left wrist as his enemy grabbed a gun and car ried the arm up and back until a sport writer in the audience yelled "break" from fonye of habit Henry Hall as Struve, the unscrupu lous lawyer, acted drunk most of the time and this character was portrayed cleverly. Elizabeth Ross as the muco divorced "Duchess," was one of the bright comedy stars, and John Sum ner as Dextry got a laugh out of every sentence. Walter Regan as "Broncho Kid," the gambler, was quietly effect ive. Walter B. Gilbert as Billy Wheat on, the honest lawyer, took the part with fire and enthusiasm, while Wal ter Siegfried as the weak and vacillat ing Judge Stlllman got the right touch to his role. Miss McHenry In the leading wom an's role of Helen Chester was quite up to her usual dainty standard and Mary Edgett Baker as Cherry Malotte, the girl of the mining camps, was seen at her best. Roses for Border to Eoads to Crown Pt. It is purposed to border the roads that lead to Crown Point on the Co lumbia river highway with double rows of Portland roses before the world dedication of the highway on the first day of the Rose Festival, June 7. E. J. Jaeger, chairman of the Rose Festival directorate committee on world dedication of the highway, has announced his appointment of an ad visory committee to aid in planning the Rose Festival's great opening fea ture. The committee members are: Samuel C Lancaster, Emery Olmstead, J. A. Currey, H. J. Blaeslng. Father George Schoener, Frederick V. Hol nian and E. B. McFarland. Mr. Lancaster is chairman of the committee. First, work of the committee will be to encourage all living on Sandy boule vard. Base Line and Section Line roads as well as the cutover roads, to plant roses which will be in bloom by the opening of the Rose Festival. The people will be advised as to the varieties which may be planted and bo blooming by the time of the festival. At the main turns in the roads unique guides may be erected rose arches, in addition to the customary arrows, which may also have floral decoration. The committee will have the co operation, said Mr. Jaeger, of eight or ten of the city's prominent florists. Tothe committee will be submitted the suggestion that wild roses be placed at appropriate places on the highway in the gorge of the Columbia. WIND BLOWS AS THE THIRD SPAN SWINGS INTO BRIDGE IN Three Tugs Handle Barges in Good Shape in Spite of the Elements, Vancouver, Wash., Dec 13. The third completed span of the Columbia river bridge was floated out and set into position yesterday afternoon. A stiff wind, which sprang up Just after the spaji had been lifted on the barges from the construction dock, caused a little trouble, and had it not been for three tugs It is probable that the cur rent and the downstream wind would have caused the barges and span to drift into the railroad bridge. The barges drifted downstream quite a distance during the time the span was being turned around and while the tugs were taking their pofeitlons on the downstream side of the barges; but as soon as the tugs secured . these posi tions, the immense mass of steel began its upstream trip. Work on the assembling of the span from the abutment on I lay den island to the first pier in- the river it pro gressing rapidly, and In a short time this will have been completed. This will make four completed spans on ths south end of the main river bridge. Clarke Fair Grounds Sold. Vancouver. Wash., Dec. 13. The Clarke county fair grounds, together with the buildings, were sold Saturday by Sheriff K. 8. Blesecker to creditors of the fair association who held mort gages on the premises. C. H. Falk bid in 7.09 acres, on which he held a mortgage, his bid being 33931.89; and George H. Young bid in 18.S0 acres, which he sold several years ago, at $8126.95, this amount including costs. Just what disposition will be .made of the association is not known. Several granges in the county desire to put on a grange fair, which would be strictly agricultural and which would elimi nate various amusement features. It is also understood that a movement is on foot whereby the members of the association hope to devise some means of financing the proposition and con duct it on a smaller scale. Ferry Was Grounded. Vancouver, Wash., Dec. 13. The Co lumbia river stood at 5.3 feet above sera this morning at the Northern Pa cific dock, showing a drop of eight tenths of a foot during; the past Zi hours. The ferryboat City of Van couver ran aground on Hayden Island on its first trip this rooming and nearly an hour was consumed )xi pull ing It from its resting place.
