The costumer had some what minimized the defective necks and shoulders that were exposed, but some of those within the range of vision actually formed a sufficient argument to per suade Dame Fashion to issue an edict against the decollete. It is not within the power of every woman to become a Venus. But every woman has a great deal to do with the molding of her neck, shoulders and arms. Scrawny necks and yellow shoulders above an elegant gown remind me of a with ered flower in a beautiful vase. Very few women possess necks and shoulders that fully correspond with perfect standards. But those who strive to perfectly mold them come closest to perfection. Possessors of beautiful shoul ders cannot expect them to retain their beauty without Mime degree of attention. Scrawny necks and blotched shoulders are as ugly to behold as those that are made defective by rolls of fat. No gown, however beau tiful it may be, can more than slightly modify their ugli ness. The dressmaker who can more than moderately minimize their ugliness is at a premium when it is possible to locate her. It is often unkind to criti cise physical defects, but only jwhen the defects are such that they cannot be remedied. -It is possible for all women to possess at least passable arms, neck and shoulders, and when they neglect this possibility they throw them selves open to criticism for more reasons than one. They are classed with the negli gent and indolent, whoarouse little sympathy but much criticism and pity. Few women go through life at exactly normal weight. But many more than do could keep within a reasonable degree of that desired point. The skirl of very few women retains its youthful beauty, clear ness and coloring until they are ready to abandon the low-cut and short-sleeved gown that is appropriate for evening wear. But those who give it even moderate attention are blessed with pretty necks and shoulders long after their negligent sisters blush with shame when they don an evening gown and stand before their mirrors. The attention that prevents discolorations also keeps the neck and shoulders from be coming too fat or too thin. For those who wear evening gowns it is just as essential to keep the shoulders and arms in good condi tion as the face. Yet it is safe to assume that the shoulders never receive as much atten tion as the cheeks and lips. Many women give great care and atten ion to the complexion, have their hair care fully attended to and coiffed in the latest fashion, and yet appear with yellow necks showing decided signs of neglect. One pretty little woman of my acquaint ance takes pride, I believe, in her shriveled throat, for she powders her little,. tilted nose until it looks as though it had been dead for some time,- and throws up her head, disclos ing the most neglected neck I have ever seen. It is a simple matter to have a nice neck and arms. It requires only some regular . exercises to round the muscles and some simple massage treatment, which one can do fm!self, to keep-the skin smooth and firm. No face, however beautiful, can make up for neglected shoulders, arms and neck. As much attention should be given to the throat upon retiring as to the face. ' Whenever creams are used to lubricate the muscles and skin the neck should come in for its share of attention. The chin should be held high and the throat firmly rubbed with some pure, nourishing cream every night, unfailingly. If the neck is inclined to be bony and the arms too thin, massage treatment will do much to fill out the thin places. But do your own massaging, for at the same time the flesh is being benefited the mus cles of the arms are developing. Mb whitewa&h can Cover blemishes that are caused by neglects It is so easy to heal and beautify the skin that any neglect seems criminal to me, ' If the arms and neck are inclined to be brown and greasy they can be improved by rubbing them with ordinary washing starch, after the first ablution, before drying. Rub the starch all over the surface, leaving it on ATO STYLES of evening gowns ever have been more pleasing than those which displayed the beauty of neck and shoulders. for a few moments, then bathe it off with cold water. Maybe you cannot be a Venus, but you can strive to be one, and your efforts will lead to improvement. If your neck and shoulders do not grace an evening gown stop a moment and ascertain whether you" are treating them fairly or entirely neglecting them. Mix and apply with absorbent cotton, rubbing thor oughly. Leave on half an hour, then wash off with cold water. Do this four times a day. ELIZABETH A. Orange flower lido food: - Melt together in a water bath one-half ounce of white wax, one-half ounce of spermaceti, one ounce of lanolin, two ounces of sweet almond oil and one ounce of coconut oil. Take off the fire and beat until cold, adding, little by little, two ounces of orange flower witer to which five drops of tincture of benzoin have been added. Be sure to beat ingredients constantly until quite cold. Beating is the secret of fine cream. JOAN The liver spot pomade is made of twenty grains of sulphate of zinc and one ounce of elder flower ointment. Apply at night and wash off in the morning with pure castile soap and warm water. Another ef fective treatment is to take a teaspoonful of the best olive oil every morning before break fast and the same quantity half an hour After the last meal of the day. In a few months this will clear your skin and improve your health. Also beneficial for the same purpose is the unsweetened juice of a lemon taken in a glass of water every morning before break fast. Avoid rich pastries and drink plenty of cool, not iced, water between meals. Eat quantities of fruits and vegetables and walk at least three miles a day.
