(Adv.) and Phone Marshall 1752 ITS BflTlES Her Boy Is 16; Xkinks He s a Man H r. r. Mother Is Lonesome; That s the Rut By . Jack Lait. DEAR MRS. N. Your letter about your 16-year-old boy app;als to me, and I can conceive of no bet ter use for the space this reply will occupy If Its message carries to the hearts of otber mothers worried by similar problems. Let me sum up your own facts about your son; He's 16, passes for IS. is pathetical ly anxious to be a sport, and thinks the way to start is to smoke cigar ettes; hasn't been to church for ft year doesn't pal with mother any more, stays out late, plays pool and thinks he's good at it, wants to sit be hind a glass of beer and smile at a cabaret singer; works downtown ; earns little, asks you for money; 1" not steady at his work, doesn't get enough sleep or rest; thinks his boss is down on him. Well, It Is a typical case. And be fore we go further let me tell you the symptoms aren't indicative of a chronic disease. Ten to one he'll lie a fine man. But that "one" frightens me: so let's see what we can do lo g'.:ard against a long ehot romping home for the crooked stable and break Ir.g mother, who always bets on her son. It seems to be given to a great many boys, when they turn about 16. to grow impatient because the hair on the lip doesn't flourish as fast as it did on Hip Van Winkle and to ape the near-men of 21 or so. That isn t ffrtal. The trouble is that the ones your lad apes happen to be the kind who suck hand made cigarettes and go out In the parks Sunday nights trying to s-rape acquaintances with kitchen maids. That he no longer chums with you Is distressing but not necessarily heinous. Of course he should want his mother above any other person on earth. But few boys do. They love tl.eir mothers, but they don't play much with them after they think they're grown up. Why, even older men than your stripling say by their votes that "a woman's place is in the home," as though that proved any thing, oi" as though anybody disputed it. A woman's plate is In the home and a nian'w place is in the waine home, right beside her. But women utand for their end of the rule and men don't, and your boy thinks he's a man and he knows that you wouldn't ap prove of the things he does and he doesn't think you'd be very thrilling in a pool game. And he likes the cabarets. So do T. But I've about quit going to them. The reason Is that I've grown tired of them. There Isn't any especial harm in a cabaret, though I don t care for that 6itting behind a glass of beer end of it. Calarel6 can be thoroughly digested on pop. The most serious part of the caba ret count In the Indictment Is the beer. That's bad. No hoy has to get tired of liquor to get rid of his appe tite for It. No boy need have an appe tite for it at all. It Isn't a natural craving, like some others that aren't healthy. Its tin acquired habit that starts through a boy who Isn't old enough to know better trying to Imi tate men who are old enough but who don't know better. You can stop the beer drinking. Tell your boy that you sit at home and are afraid of his returning. Tell him j-cj expect him any night to stagger In drunk. That Isn't fair. If he can't be with you or won't be with you eve nings, the least he can do Is to relieve you of that deadly fear that kills your whole evening, sick as it already Is without Ms presence. Make him promise that he will not drink beer or whisky or wine. If he'n 16 It can't be a habit ypt. He owes you the absolute knowledge at all times that he at least Is sober. Make him promise and make him keep his Mark the 41 ft i ... M?. I ill iillih y":" - HiilMw G Portland Branch, Broadway at Burnaide OODRICH LlflaBvaaBaeaevaHBBVBBBaaBaaaHD promise. If he breaks It he has no heart and no conscience. i In later life we look back and smile about the way we played hookey and fibbed to mother and teacher; about the way we slipped out to meet tho girl next door and told ma we were going to study with IjuU; about the way, even, that we stretched the truth a bit to get a chance to play pool. And these recollections aren't bitter. Boys aren't angels They have a lot of thoughts and desires that mother couldn't understand, even though she Is mother. But drinking liquor Isn't In that class. A boy who will He to his mother about drmklns something that is poi son to him and poison to ler anj Inay bring him home any night a corpse or a murderer or a thief that boy is get ting far and away outside the priv ileges and flexibility of the "boys will be boys'' license. Stop him. I'm sorry the lad doesn't get along well In business. That's a sorry sign. Of course, a boy of 1G win never meant to attend to business at all. It's only our social lack of system, which twists everything out of its natural shape and bounds, that puts him to work. Hut. since he la at work, he should be on the Job. A man's work probably is the most important factor In Ms life after a certain age. It is his identity. When anyone asks, "Who's that man?" the answer isn't "John Smith's oldest son." but "the assist ant foreman of (he tin can works" or "private secretary to Watklns, the lum ber dealer," or something connected with a Job. Insist that he bo home at a certain hour say 10 o'cloik. It Isn't the pleasantest way to get him home, but It seems the only nay, and it's prob ably better in the long run than no way at all. Always lt up for him. ThHt's a great deterrent against late hours. If ho knows you're sleepily wailing it may prick his conscience, and I'm sure he has plenty of con-Ecb-nce. And don't give him nuy money. If he can't live and play pool on the money he earns, less a decent sum for board to you, he doesn't deserve to spend an. There's an Incentive for him to attend to his business. Make him know that he can't get any money except by earning it and that he will have plenty to spend when he earns plenty. The motive may not be high. but the results will be good, and by the time he gets along I" business he'll get wrapped up in it and cool down a good deal of the raharrt fever, and then he'll have a good start toward a substantial future. I know it's hard to refuse the lad a few nickels. Heaven knows that's all you have It for. What else can you do with It? But you mustn't. Since luck has cast him to earn his living, make him realize that he has to play his own luck. As for you being lonesome that'a where I stop. This Is about tha boy, lady, not about you. I'm sorry for you In your long hours alone. I, my self, probably couldn't endure It. But I'm afraid you must. Mothers, pretty generally, havs to go through the ex perience of seeing their babies grow up, watching over them, weeping over them, worrying over thein, then see ing them fade gradually out of tho life that lives for them. I'm sorry, but that Is life's way.
