so that there will be no racing payroll
after t August 1. ' The various Maxwell

where they will ' be overhauled,
but no Intimation is made -as to their
disposal other than that they will not
be raced by the Maxwell company or
any of -its subsidiaries; 4 It is claimed
that this withdrawal Is not due to the
death of Carlson and his mechaulc 1n
the recent Tacoma meet but to-certain'
dissatisfaction In connection with - cer

senger cars for . the next year., Fif
teen - two-ton . trucks are being
shipped daily. Work has been started
upon a tract; four 'and one half acres
of ground, for the 'erection of a large
r.ew plant for the truck organization.
The Reo truck Is handled In this terri
tory .by the C: L. Boss company. :
The additions to the Reo. plant an
nounced several weeks ago will bo
more extensive than originally planned.
They will - consist of a three story
structure, lftl try 256 feet, with. base
ment, being an addition to the general
assembling ; department; to the final
assembly.-department there will be
added mn entirely new addition, three
stories ln;helght, 115 by 138 feet, with
basement, while, the present assembly
building - will receive, two ; additional
stories, SO by 153 'feet, a three story
addition- 60x74 feet, will be added
to the - engineering bufldingr. - Ship
ping facilities will be greatly, relieved
through the construction of a loading
dock along the Grand Trunk railroad,
347 feet 'long and 36 feet .wide. : (

The touring motorist who : travels
over the Paclfc highway from Oregon
to California will long remember the
beauty of the scenery and the splendid
character of the road bed of thai rntrt
of his journeys that lies betweelr the

sUte line. The trip over the Siskiyou
mountains is one of the most wonder
ful and beautiful, rides tn America, and
the people of Oregon may well consid
er this stretch of the Paclfc highway
as one of the biggest scenic assets they
possess.
The old Journey over the' Slskiyoua,
on what was known as the Do liar hide
toll road, was one of discomfort as
well as danger.- It was a "rough and
rugged road." with grades as high as
30 per cent. - that taxed the best of
machines.. Seven grade crossings over
the-tracks, of the Southern Pacific
made It dangerous, especially as the
grades were heavy on rail j and road. r
