INVITATION TO HEAD NEW ADVISORY BODY Great ' Inventor, Probably Aided "by Orville Wright, to - Respond to National Call, TO WORK ON SUBMARINES Secretary of Wavy Daniels Invites Xn- venters to Be Kemfcers of CivU lians' Adrisory Board. Washington. July 13. (U. P.) Formal acceptance of Tnomai M Edi son a head of an, advisory board of 1 civilian inventors and engineers for a new bureau of invention and develop ment in- the navy department was pre sented to Secretary Daniels today by j. M. U. Hutchinson. ., the f famous in ventor's personal representative. Hutchinson said Edison had re frained from offering his services in the past, but that he now felt called upon to perform his 'sacred duty t toward the country be .loves. Edison will forward a letter to Secretary Daniels soon expressing his apprecia tion of the honor in being asked to . serve upon the new advisory board. Orville Wright is understood to be .scheduled to join Thomas A. Edison . upon th board, which is now being . organized. Edison will devote himself to the development of submarines. to aviation. While the electrical wizard and the aeroplane inventor will not be limited in their work to any particular field. Secretary Daniels regards the ubnrarlne and aircraft as likely to play the most important part In the sea warfare of the future, and is de sirous that they receive the greatest attention from the new board. Other inventors are soon expected to an nounce their acceptance of membership on me navy board. In mentioning the .. change in conditions of naval warfare v as brought about by the submarine, he wrote that he was confident Edison's inventive genius .would aid the navy .. toward meeting r'lhia new danger with devices that wif) cssure peace to our country by thei effectiveness. With the example set - by Edison. : it is expected that all other inven , tors who are asked to accept a place -on the advisory board will promptly f accept. Danlels then explained his idea for the creation of a board of civilian inventors and engineers. He said he believed such a department of in vention ' and development should be established to which all Ideas and suggestionsneither f rom - the service or civilians, can be: referred. . The secretary said that while suggestions are now being received, they must be referred to various bureaus, already overcrowded with routine work, and such Ideas cannot always be given the attention , deserved. "What I want to ask is If you will be willing, as a service to your coun try, to act as advisor to this board, to take such things as seem to you to be of value, but which we are not at present equipped to investigate, and use your own, magnificent facili ties in such investigation if you feel it worth while." Other men who were suggested for possible membership on the new board were Henry Ford, Nikola Tesla, Cooper Hewitt and Professor Lewis Johnson. Austria Pnblishes "Red Book." Vienna, July 13. (I. N". In burling bombs by .hand it: is difficult to give i great force and the catapult cannot always be convenient ly used. Attached to them is a chain strapped on the wrist. If the Ger mans returned the bomb on failure to explode, this .Canadian would catch It with his six 'foot stick and send it flying back.. ' So successful was the lacrosse com bination that all the Canadians " who brought their sticks from Canada took them, to the trenches.
