from Portland with yesterday's double
win, f to 5 nd 9 to 1. 8. Coveleskie
and George Kahler were charged with
the defeats. Old Dutch Klawitter
managed to get into the game long
enough to get credit' for the morning
victory, while Elmer Marttnonl, who
was "knocked out of the box in the
morale?, held the northerners to one
run in the afternoon battle, which was

' was one of the ' longest bwats ever
made in the Oakland park. .

deposed "yesterday because he ' could

Salt Lake last night. It is rumored
that the Oakland club is still after
Del Howard to manage it. It was re

Portland used three pitchers in the
morning, Keefe, Coveleskie and Evans.
Prough started It for Oakland, and
three runs were made off him at the
Start, but Coveleskie could not stand
prosperity, and the Oaks tied a three
run lead in the third, their two runs
In the sixth giving them the game.
Kahler was knocked out of the box
in the second game in the fourth In-
ning, and Evans finished it up.
The Beavers will remain in San
Francisco this week to meet the Ban
Francisco club.

Chalking up a 3 to 0 victory over
the Sellwood Merchants In the first
game of yesterday's City league dou
blebeader, the Maroons made it eight
straight victories. In the second con
test the East Side Redmen showed
their heels to the West Side Monarchs,
winning, 11 to 2.
Richard Maxmeyer was on the
mound for the Sellwood team. He
pitched great ball, allowing but six
binaries, but two of them being clean
swats, and whiffing: 18 batters. Bone
headed plays On the part of a pair
of players save the Maroons a couple
of tallies, and also robbed the Sell-
1 i wooders of a chance to score In the
2 ! ninth frame.
"Sunny" Moeller pitched for the
league leaders. He was In danger but
once during the game,, and t'aat was in
tbe ninth frame, when Smitn connect
ed for his third hit and NeUson fol
lowed with a double.
Red" Lund held the Monarchs to
one hit. while his team mates chased
across 11 runs with 11 bingles. Errors
gave the West Slders . two of their
three : runs. j

practice spins today. AU showed de
cided Improvement since their arrival.
Stanford . pulled six miles, tbe hardest
workout of- the day. " Coach Frank
Ouerena announced that his giants
gained an average of five pounds on
route across the continent.
While other crews attended church
or strolled through the bills Sunday,
Stanford's Cardinal launched their
shell and took a 10 mile paddle down
stream and back.
This action was frowned upon by
the other college crews, among whom
there Is an unwritten law against
work on Sunday. - Guerena says - the

weetern league has - taken over the
Victoria franchise thrown ue'" by
Joshua Klngham last week, and will
conduct the club until an angel can be
found. President Brown of tbe Van
