At no. oint fn the 3384 mile, of Us length is iiere a political situation that threat na to Interfere with its local lmprove ient or the normal progress of the en ure program. The tirvt announcement of a pro osel coast-to-coast highway brought lorth an inundation of letters,- tele- rams, resolutions, petitions, maps. KetcheS, reports from supposedly dis interested sources, and finally delega- iions, traveling long distances, and resenting a solid, and determined ront, ' " : From the beginning, the directors of ie Lincoln Highway association felt keen sense of responsibility in the election of a route. Street Kont Aim. Having decided upon the two ter- ilnals of this great road, New York ity.on the Atlantic seaboard, and San ranctsco on the Pacific coast, it re gained for them to connect these two oints In the Inoat direct manner pos ible, 'with duo regard to the topogra fry of ths country, population , to be erved, and the ease and facility with hicn existing Tiignways could be ln- kiroonnected. The sum total of these arioua factors it was thought would resent a road, which could be con tracted at the least possible' cost. Left to right Along the route of the Colombia Highway in Hood River county; Entrance to the Mitchell Point TunneL According to present calculations the Columbia highway will be open to travel as far as the city of Hood River by the middle of July. The work in Multnomah county will be completed by that time, and by the use of the old grade around Mitchell Point in Hood River county it will be possible to drive a machine to Hood River city. The work at - Mitchell Point will not be completed before the middle of August, according to the statement of the contractors. One of the most scenic points on the highway will be the Mitchell Point tunnel.' which will be about 400 feet In . length. ' The wall on the river side will have five large window giving a view of the river and the Washington shore. The whole effect will be similar to that of the cele brated Axenstrasse along the ( shore of Lake Uri in Switzerland. J essary to success, they had chosen a route which did not pass through a single one of their "home cities." This result was striking, and made a deep impression upon the 'minds of the peo ple of the country-- In addition, the plan of the highway; as announced did not pass through a city that was con sidered an automobile production cen ter, although the automobile industry had been most active in the movement Best Results Bought. The pre-vislon of the directors of the Lincoln highway In the selection of the route of this great 3400 mile road, without "a ferry from Hudson river to Ban Francisco bay. is now apparent. Arguments, debates, sur veys, maps, etc., prepared by local communities, served' their purpose and lent important aid. The route of the Lincoln highway was selected and an nounced by proclamation, accompanied by a ringing patriotic appeal to : the citizens of the country at large. ; Never for a single moment have the directors of the Lincoln highway swerved from their; fixed ; purpose of putting through the most direct route id the shortest possible time. They have . been- broad enough to see ' the thing in Its strue perspective. and strong enough to resist every local In fluence which fwaa out of step with the national movement. . In every case where. local pride beckoned to the by paths, the decision has been in favor of the stralghtest road- The success of the undertaking attests the wisdom of its founders, and , gives - to their square-toed policy the strongest pos sible endorsement. i ' ' m American Trucks On Lonaon Streets Had an American motor track man ufacturer prophesied a Year ago that within a few months motor trucks made in this country would be used for omnibus work in the streets of London he - would, undoubtedly, have been laughed at in a good many quar ters. ' Today he could point to that prophecy with an "l-told-you-so air. At least 30 American made trucks have been placed in omnibus service in London by .the Great Western rail road during the last two month & It is rather a noteworthy fact that these trucks, quipped as they are with gear drive axles,' hav:1 passed every test, prescribe'd' by' Scotland Tard for quiet ness of operation. . ACROSS CONTINENT ROADS IN CONDITION Mountain Snows Which Have Proved Barrier Have Disappeared, Automobile tourists can now proceed safely on practically all of the trans continental highways from coast to coast, is the announcement Just made by the -Goodrich National Touring bu reau. :l The large mountain, snows that have barricaded certain of the passes in , the western mountain ranges are now cleared and hundreds of trans continental tourists who were held up east of the ranges are now crossing same on . their way to. the Pacific coast. '-. The i Goodrich bureau- has prepared complete 'route description and Trans continental books covering all of the recommended lateral highways from coast to coast, which can be procured gratis from automobile clubs or through local garages. Nerer Heard of It. "X woman can do anything with a hairpin." "Did you ever hear of a" woman try ins to patch a puncture with a' hair pin7 "No. The only women I know ride on Silvertown Cord tires." Automobile dealers in . the eastern part of Washington have responded very generally to the movement set on foot by a group of Seattle motor car distributors which is to result in the generally state wide organization of those engaged in the sale of motor propelled vehicles, according to the statement of Prank M. Fred well, sec retary of .the Washington Automobile Chamber of Commerce and Automobile club of Seattle, who has Just returned from a 2000 mile trip covering all of the principal, points east of the Cas cade mountains. Fretwell celebrated the last leg of the return trip by driv ing through Snoqualmle Pass and prob ably succeeded in getting over the di vide with less difficulty than any one has yet experienced this year. Times Save Changed. In the past, it has generally been considered that the automobile ' has been of the most importance: to the man of the city but. according to Sec retary Fretwell this viewpoint as a matter of fact. Is rapidly changing, as the motor car supplies quick and rapid transportation for the man in the country who always has greater dis tances to travel. - Eastern Washington ideally proves the truth of this statement. I refer especially to the wheat belt of the state. t The automobile men are going to be In Tacoma in force, if the enthusiasm in eastern. Washington is any indica tion of the Interest of the dealers in the western part of the state. Prac tically all the representative, agents east of the Cascades have agreed to go to Tacoma July 3 and take part in the first annual convention of the Wash ington Automobile Chamber of Com merce, where a comprehensive year's l . The" Dodge distributor for Spokane and surrounding territory, Guy Reigel. is looking after the arrangements for the contingent from that part of east ern Washington. A Pullman car is to be arranged for so that the Spokane dealers i will be assured of hotel ac commodations. The convention Itself will be i held ' at the Tacoma . Commer cial club and Washington Chamber of Commerce assembly room, and while exact hours have not yet been agreed upon, it will probably be at 10 o'clock in the nornlng and 2 o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday before begin ning the Speedway race. ' . The complete roster of officials are to be elected and it Is more than likely a speaker of national importance will be on the program. v v AUSTRIA WILL BUY GRAIN Geneva, Swltserland, - June . -Information has reached here from Vien na that the war grain committee of the Austrian government has an nounced that it . will take under its control I the entire harves;tl.soon to be gathered. LARK'S TIME.,. ... 13 hours, 45 min. Most Marvelous Road Record In Motor Car History California was startled Friday, June 4, by news of this greatest of all auto runs, which beat the Southern Pacific's fastest train between Los An geles and San Francisco by an hour and thirty five minutes. z The car was a fuEy equipped touring car, carry ing four passengers. It 'was the first eight re? served by Don Lee in Los Angeles and had been run' 17,Q00 miles before the record dash. It was of ficially checked by committees of newspaper men , in Los, Angeles.. BakersBeld, Fresno, Gilroy and San Francisco." No trouble whatever was experienced on the entire trip, and at the finish a committee of motor- t S ists and newspaper v men examined the car ancf found it in perfect condition. ; Such a record over boulevards, mountain and. desert stamps the Cadillac Eight a marvel for power, : endurance and 1 reliability. ' : The car 'was sent over the hardest of roads at the highest pbs sible speed, (and as. a crowning achievement went the final 80 miles into San Francisco in 93 minutes. So perfect was the'oOihg anH cooling system, it was possible to . make the trip ' without a fan. This was removed before the start The motor 'gave perfect service,' and not a single weakness de veloped. Another convincing proof that the Cadil lac Eight i is the greatest motor car the world has ever known.; - : , " - C , ..." . v " ' . 1 , - i Twenty-first and Washington Sts.
