Are -Pleased With Events, By Douglass Shelor; " "Hard luck,", was. the way the race drivers expressed 'themselves yester day afternoon when the rain broke up the meet at the -Rose City; speedway during the fifth -mile of the third event.. Fewer than a thousand people gathered inside the race course; about twice that number gathered at vantage' points outside the course. . The rain in the early part of the day caused hundreds of . people to stay home. Those, however, who braved the storm witnessed two or as rine races as wene ever run on tho Portland course. Jim Parsons, the pride of the north west, came into his own yesterday, when he broke the northwest record for 15 miles over, a dirt track. This record was set in the second event of the day, with the Parsons Special first, time 1 31 minutes and, 45 seconds flat. Schneider's Special ; was second, and the Gordon Special.! with Frank Elli ott at the wheel, third. The track after the water dried off f from the first rain, was .In ideal condition ex cept near the rail on the east turn, where there was a little'mud near the fence,1 causing the drivers to pass wide at this point. - When the second event was called. Parsons remarked that he would win or run every other car off the course. The three speed burners lined up at the tape, and when the "go" signal wasi riashedj they were off in a cloud of smoke that entirely obliterated them until they straightened out on the first turn. Then it was seen that the Schneider Special was leading by about two lengths. The Gordon Special wag in second . place and Parsons brought up-the rear. Every one heaved a sigh, for Jim was easily the favorite-of the Crowd.''3" ,;! '." ; . - - The first two miles were clicked off in- the very fast time of two minutes from a standing start, and the third lap was negotiated in 64 seconds flat. The fifth lap saw Parsons driving like a demon, and just as the ' three big racers passed the grand stand Parsons took second ' place from the Gordon, after' having driven the fastest lap of the race turning the -mile In 52 1.-5 seconds. It could be seen that Par sons was making his boast good. Dur fng the next two laps he drove neck and neck with ; the Schneider car, and in the eighth lap nosed ahead of the yellow racer on the back -stretch. From this lap on Parsons was (never headed and won with about three lengths to spare.. . -; , Class B Baca Interest, j; - The first " event also proved a very interesting one, as the class - B ; cars were handicapped by the starter. ' The Veils No. 4, that won most- of the class B events, last 'Week, .was given the go signal 60 seconds after the first car had left the tape in a 10 mile drive. Fred Forbes, in his Buick, got away second in this event, but soon overtook the Marm on. After once gain ing the lead, Forbes was never headed and finished a quarter of a mile ahead of the Velie. The time made in this race was 10 minutes and 19 seconds. Just after the third race, a 15 mile class B handicap, had gotten under way, the rain began to fall in torrents and ii. L. Keats, western representa tive of the American' Automobile asso ciation, and Frank Atwell, referee, con ferred, and deemed It advisable ito call the meet off. They gave V. Li. Don aldson, starter. Instructions to stop the cars, that were then in the fifth lap.- When the race wag stopped, C. N. Bankhead's Pope Special was leading.
