THE 'OREGON ' DAIL JOURNAL,? PORTLAND, FRIDAY EVENING, PRIL :0, v 1915. f WUL THE GOVERNOR ' FAVOR POLITICIANS OR THE SPORTSMEN? j . : ' " Selection of Eastern-Oregon Member of Fish and Game Commission Is Issue. ONLY TWO IN THE FIELD Marloa JMk ad . b. Grow Art Cu OldtUs and Bach Km Backing., ' (Spcll to Tti. Journal.) Pendleton, Or,, April 8. Whether the politicians or the sportsmen Will be ; recojrnized In the naming: of the eaeern Oregon member of the new f ih and came commission Is a ques tion, the answer of which will be in teresting: to the people of this section of ttye state. Governor Wlthycombe will decide the matter within the next few weeks and present indications are that he , has an embarrassing problem on his hands. The indorsement of nearly every member of the senate has been secured for Marlon Jack of this city for the position, while 8. D. Crowe of la .urande haa the support of the sportsmen's organizations of elicht eastern Oregon counties, according to miormation received by the Umatilla lsii ana Game association. James Nichols, president of the Baker Sportsmen's association, yester day telegraphed to the governor, the witnarawal of his candidacy, recom mending 'at the same-time S. D. Crowe. Nichols action united the sportsmen of Morrow, Umatilla, ' Union, Grant, Baker, Malheur and Harney counties and eliminated- an - element that was said to be militating in favor of Jack. Jack was first recommended for the position by the Umatilla county legis lators, 6r rather by three of them Senator Burgees and Representatives Hitner and Stanfleld.. Senator Barrett has, refused to support Jack, and has given his support a the La Grande man. Representative Hinkle had urged the appointment of Dr. H. S. Garfield of this city, but swung In line for Jack, simultaneously with the dis missal of a case against himself and Garfield for shooting ducks after sun down, a -case that had been pending for several months and during the pendency of which .District Game Warden Averill lost his official head and was succeeded by. Senator Burgess' private secretary, W C E. Pruitt. It was upon Pruitt's recommendation that the case against Hinkle and Garfield was dismissed. Through the Influence of the local legislators, the indorsement of nearly all of the members of the senate and a number of the representatives was soured for. Jack, and reports reach here that the governor has favored Jack's appointment because the sportsmen-were divided. Now, however, the sportsmen have united on Crowe,-, and are openly op posing the appointment of the local man. This opposition arises from the fact that Jack, during the time the j legislature was meeting, expressed himself as out of sympathy with the commission form of administering tfame aff airs, r . ' . : -;'; Thus, unless the governor ' chooses to select some- third man not now in tha race, there seems a probability that he will have to offend either the sportsmen or the politicians. - - f Portland Lauded i As Scenic Paradise rocers of Bast and Kiddle West emd lag Matty1 tetters Asking About Ex cursion Trips. s Many Inquiries are being received from grocers in the east and middle west, asking about Portland and short trips they may make therefrom, by Robert 3. Duncan, editor of the Oregon Merchants' Magsslne. In replying to the letters-Mr. Duncan says he is able to recommend Portland as the center of a scenic paradise, but that ha can not be so enthusiastic concerning the roads over which the various places of interest may be reached. . The National Retail Grocers asso ciation holds its convention at San Francisco May 10 to 17, and many of the delegates will stop In Portland, either going or coming. The local as sociation is making arrangements to entertain them, probably by a trip over the Columbia river highway. A steam er trip up the river has been suggest ed, but Mr. Duncan says that it is Im practicable because of the lack of a , big excursion steamer. "What we need," said Mr. Duncan this morning, "is good roads, real good roads and lots of them. It will be with little Joy that I show the visiting gro cers the magnificent panorama from Council Crest, knowing that there are only a few miles of good roads Out side" of the city limits." U. S.
