FOURTH YEAR HERE BIG HATCH EXPECTED TO INCREASE CATCH Coming Spring Ran on Columbia River Is Forecast as Heavy by Packer; Market Price for Good Fish to Mold at Same Figure. That unless all previous forecasts go astray there will ba heavier offer ings of salmon in the Columbia river thia spring than packers will be able to take care of, is the opinion ex pressed today by Robert 6. Farrell of Everdiog &c Farrell. owners of the Pil lar Kock Packing company. ; "Taia is the lourth year since the first big batch of young salnon were turned out of the Columbia river hatcheries." says Mr. Farrell, "and we believe the run of spring chinooks will therefore be unusually heavy. "If the war continues It is likely that the packers will turn out more fiih than usual, because there will be but a nominal output of pickled, or mild cured stock. However, during the last two months of the last season there was no pickling, and this swelled the canned pack somewhat. "Indications are at present pointing to practically the same price at the opening for canned salmon of best quality as last year. While there is pressure in ciiums because of the very heavy pack, all first class stock has been cleaned up." Chums are pressing for sale at vari ous prices with various qualities of fering. One local packer Is said to be holding about 3000 cases, and one of the big Columbia river packers -is re ported as holding about 4000 cases. The report created much amusement among the trade here, for the reason that for weeks the trade has been unable to discover sufficient wheat n the state to consider as a factor. Public warehouse men, who are in the best position to say what the holdings are, say they can find no such supply here, and pass the buck to the govern ment officials at Washington, 13. C, Serious price losses were shown for wheat in the eastern trade this morn ing. Local conditions were . rather quiet, with no business of importance reported in the country because of the very limited holdings. The fact that Switzerland Is' about to issue $5,000,000 notes to purchase foodstuffs in. : this country created some interest in the trade here. Imports by Parcel Post. . ' The total value of merchandise im ported by parcel post during the fiscal year 1912-13 amounted to $2,752,892, as against $7,475835 for the previous year. The customs department points out that the extent to which the parcel post is used in Persia today is not ritearly " so 'great as;, had been anticl-. pated. Germany led In the shipments by parcel post with merchandise val ued at $816,843, followed by the British Empire with $669,800 worth, Austrla Htmgary $281,896, France $268,028, Turkey $241,275, and Italy . $198,889.
