City Jfcecelves Protests. A largo number of protfsts are being received by City Auditor Barbur against the weed cutting assessments levied by kthe department of public works. In mosti cases the weeds were cut by em ployes of the city' and the. cost as sessed to the property. All sorts of reasons why the assessments should rot be collected are given by property owners. Johnny Jones Sentenced. 'Johnny Jones, colored, at whom Detectives Mo loney and Swennes were shooting Christmas night when a glancing bullet struck and fatally wounded Walter Askay. a passenger on a St. Johns car, was sentenced to three to 15 years in the penitentiary by Circuit Judge Da vis this morning. Beekman a com mittee of the bar to draw up resolu tlon$ on his death. "Verdict for $30O Damages. Gottlieb Schwob was awarded $300 damages by a jury in Circuit Judge Gantenbein's court this morning in his suit for $5000 damages against the Portland Railway, Light & Power company. He alleged that his wagon was struck by a car at Grand avenue ad Kast Alder street a year ago, and that he was seriously injured. Ordered Out of Town. Municipal Judge Stevenson yesterday ordered Mrs. Maud Wallace, of the Northamp ton apartments, who was arrested last week on immoral charges, to leave the city within 24 hours, following her trial and that, of Carl Ielitnan, aged 27, who was consorting with her, for vagrancy. Abatement proceedings were started yesterday by District Attorney Evans to secure an Injunction against the use for immoral purposes of the Plaza ho tel, 2074 Third street, owned by George T; Myers and. run by Mrs. N. J. Wade. Plead Guilty to Tieft. Julius Pierro and Walter Lane pleaded guilty in the municipal court this morning to a charge of stealing scrap lead from the Southern Pacific company in the Brooklyn yards, and each was given SO days in Jail. Missionary Rally Postponed. The missionary rally of the Young People's society, First Church of the Nazarene East Seventh and Couch streets, has keen postponed a week on account of the Bulgin meetings. MINIMUM WAGE IS $2 DAILY Role Is to Be Effective If the Ordinance Wins. The minimum wage of city laborers will be $2 a day and the maximum pay $3 a day while the pay of skilled la borers will Be according to that paid by private firms provided an ordinance introduced before the city council Wednesday by Commissioner Brewster Is adopted. At present all day laborers are paid $3 a day flatj therebeing no minimum or maximum.
