Society- is Doins EIggifl TO a chosen few, the women of the Professional Worttn'i league rave one of the moat enjoyable burlesque concert programs Saturday evening at the Art Museum that Portland , people have ever heard. It was an all-star cast from start to. finish, with world fa mo us musicians In abundance. : "The Spirit of the Day." a farce written by Mrs. Harry Beal Torrey. was the opening number. The charac ters were "A Tired Woman," Mrs. Chamberlain: 'Plum Pudding." Miss Elisabeth Hoar; "Indigestion." Miss Joscelyn Foulkes; "The Present That Nobody Wanted," Mrs. Berry East ham; "French Doll." Mrs. Charles E. Bears; "Buster Brown," Miss Gertrude Talbot, and "A Child," Miss Henrietta Klbbs. Each part was fittingly costumed and portrayed with a cleverness that started the evening with peals of laughter. - MTss Bertha Brainard followed with "Dance by a Brownie"; violin num bers by Miss Abby Whiteside as. Miss .Maud Powell were well received. She gave "Cavatlna," and as an encore a real "Humoresque." Miss Whiteside was given a cheery reception, but was advised to continue as "one of our leading pianists." A beautiful poem was recited by Miss Hannah Schloth, with melodra matic piano accompaniment by Mrs. Thomas Carrlck Burke. "Mr. and Mrs. Vermin Castle" danced, being impersonated by Miss Blanche Luckey and Miss Virginia Xlrby. Number 6 was "The Palms." a cor net solo, lnrwhlch Mrs. Susie Fennell PI pen, president of the club and the guiding genius of the evening's fes tivities, .simply "did herself proud." She Impersonated John Philip Sousa. "Madame Schumann - Helnk' ap peared in the place of honor on the program. Miss Mary Frances Iaom tak Ing the role of the great diva. Her singing of the famous "Erl KoeniB" was "superb," as the little general would say in "The Merry Widow." Her tone production was faultless, and fa cial expression was even better, and she left the audience In tearful happi ness. The grand finale came with the "Sextette" from Lucia, no less per sonages than "Tetranlnl.i "Homer." "Caruso," "Titta Ruffo," 'cotti" and "Jean de Resxke" sang. Their ensemble ' was a bit competitive, but they looked well. They were Miss Nona Lawler. Miss Abby Whiteside, Mrs. Harry Beal Torrey. Miss Hoar. Mrs. Charles E. Sears and Mrs. Charles McCullough. with Mrs. Pipes, as "Sousa," directing. The guests of the evening . having been kind in he extreme, as Mrs. Pipes announced, refreshments were awarded them after the performance. W C. O. F. Elects Officers. ' At the meeting. of St. Mary's Court, No. 104S. held Tuesday evening, offi cers were reelected for the ensuing year, as follows: Chief ranger. Mrs. W. A. Elvers; vice chief ranger, Mrs. M. J. After election of officers a so cial hour was enjoyed around a pret tily decorated Christmas tree loaded with presents. A dainty luncheon was served while several musical numbers on the piano were rendered by the Misses Loretta Ann Qulnn and Jessie Elvers. Clan Marleay Auxiliary Knitting. The Tidies Auxilary of Clan Mac . leay held two successful meetings at the home of Mrs. D. II. Oowans, 255 East Thirty-second street, for the pur pose of knitting articles for the bene fit of the British Red Cross. All Brit ish women who are Interested in this line of work are cordially; invited to attend another meeting given at the same address next -Tuesday afternoon and evening.
