in for a touch of city life proved cost
ly to John Jones, rooming house pro
prietor of 223 Market street, for he
was fined $100 ifi the municipal court

Sunday. Walter Holt, William Ross
and Peter Spencer of Lowell, Or., were
arrested last evening and testified
that they had purchased liquor from
Mr. Jones during the day.

,W. H. II. Derby, 64 yearsj a resident
of Oregon, is dead, aged 74 years. He
came to Oregon in 1860, and spent 41
years at Sublimity, Turner: Aumsville
rand in the Waldo hills. )At Turner
and Aumsville he was in the mercan
tile business, and ' he farmed in the
Waldo 'hills. He moved to Salem IB
years ago. He is survived by a widow
and seven children. His funeral was
held this afternoon, under the auspices
of the Masons. t :
Silas Allen Jones, who crossed the
plains in 1852 with ox teams, was
buried at Brooks Saturday afternoon.
He joined the federal army. in 1862,
and was honorably discharged In 1S65.
He was converted to the Christian
faith while attending school in Mc
Minnville. He was married to Rebecca
B. Larkins at old Waconda in 1860,
and 11 children were born. Mr. Jones i

He also confessed to the robbery of
the Imperial shoe shop at 446 East
Burnside street in October of 1913. The
lad was arrested and turned over to
the juvenile court.

Judge Stevenson expressed curiosity
this morning; as to Just how anyone
would go about insulting a crowd in
a Burnside street saloon, as James
Monroe, who was arrested Saturday by
Detectives Hill , and Hammersley is
said to have done, but a fine of $20
was assessed against him because he
knocked down Joseph Miller, aged 66,
who . refused to . give him money.
Miller appeared against Monroe In
court and exhibited a badly bruised
face as a result of the prowess of
Monroe.

Hams heaped Insult to Injury Sat
urday, for after the proprietor of a
poolroom let him go when he didn't
have any money for the pool games
he had played, he took two of the balls
along in his pocket. In front of the
pool hail he stole a box of shoe black
ing. The bootblack called a patrol
man ana Williams was arrested. This
morning he was fined 310 in the mu
nicipal court.

Henry Bartey Injured ! In PalL
Henry Bartey, a laborer of 208 East
Forty-seventh street, fell down an em
bankment in Sullivan's gulch early
yesterday morning, and broke his wrist
and received cuts on the head. He
-as taken to the Good Samaritan hos
pital. He laid In the gulch for several
hours in a dazed condition before
