The market is generally showing strengtn In all lines. SOUTHERN CABBAGE COMING A carload of California cabbage has v..... ter the lm-a.1 market on account of the scarcity of local offer ings. The shipment is expected here "Wednesday. Sales being generally mads at $1.25 a cental. - TOMATO SUPPLY IS SHORTER a.i.i. from a small shipment by steamer from San Diego, the local mar ket Is showing a famine In tomato offerings. Pales of the southern stock re generally reported at $1.25 a crate of four baskets. EGG MARKET SHOWS FIRMER Market for fresh ranch eggs s homing more strength locally but om of the dealers are still offering t 40c a dojjen. The market ranges from this price to 42c generally. ChlcRen trade Is uteady with prices enntlnueri from lust Week. Orange movement Is slightly better With prices maintained. SHIPPERS' WEATHER NOTICE Protect shipments as for north, as Feattle against minimum temperatures of about 26 degrees; northeast to Spo kane degrees; southeast to Boise, 4 Great fear Is expressed for a very largo percentage of the late potato crop In Oregon and Washington, as a result of the present cold snap. Owing to the low prices that have ruled at the start of the season and the almost general lack of shipping demand then, only a very small percentage of the crop was dug. It Is estimated by com petent interests tnai tuny tu per ceui of the crop is still In the ground. That a large portion or mis win be nipped by the cold weather is now generally conceded by the trade here. Special advices received bv The Jour nal from various portions of the Pa. cific no Edited by Hyman II. Cohen. TREND OF APPLES TOWARD A HIGHER PRICE IN MARKETS Local and Eastern Situation Is Im proved and Better Values Are Ruling in Domestic Markets as Well as in Foreign Markets. "Keiffer pears seem to be about finished, and any " stocks of pears which can be shipped to this market rrm now on will realize very aausiac tory prices. j "As regards best pears. Winter Nells are the staple article this season, and prices for these, for ianything in good hard condition, are good, notwithstand ing plentiful supplies; the bulk of the recent arrivals have, j however, been on the ripe side and prices have ruled low for these stocks In consequence. "The winter demand for apples ap pears now to have set In, and the fa vorable feeling reported last week con tinues, prices being- still on the rise. ! Anything of good appearance is well sought after, oood Baldwins are worth from 17 to 18s, York Imperials the same, and Albemarle I'lppins would meet a ready and appreciative market if here In time for the Christmas trade. "The apnies ex. ss. TMgby made much better prices than Nova Scotian stocks have hitherto reached In Lon don during the present season, as will be seen by the prices reported over- ieai. tsaiawins 11s Da, iviiigs, run, Wagners 15s 6d and Golden Russets 21s. will be specially' noted. We think these prices will be maintained for stocks arriving in time for the Christ mas trade. The market on boxed apples Is showing a great Improvement, and we expect good Oregon; Newtowns with some color would make up to 9s per box for the best counts. Californian Newtowns are-also a much better trade, for which we :can now make 7s per box for both 4 and 4 tier fruit. These prices we expect will be main tained unless supplies come in mucn larger quantities than we anticipate during the next few weeks. "The Liverpool market on applesis also still Improving, and shows an ad vance all around over last week's prices, being stronger than London on the majority of Barrel stocKs. Maine Baldwins are realizing from 15s up to 18s, Greenings arotnd lsts 6d per Bar rel. Virginian York' Imperials were a good trade at 17s 6d to 18s 9d for tight barrels, and i a few American Newtown Pippins In barrels met a ready market at from 20s to 26s per barrel. Canadian varieties also sold at good prices as reported overleaf. "Some Oregon Newtowns met with keen competition, and sales were ef fected at from 6s 9d to 9s 6d. while the best counts of a car of extra fancy stock, made 10s and lis. Californian Newtowns realized 6s 6d6s 9d for 4 tiers and 6s per box for 4',4 tiers. Washington Newtowns, large apples, sold at 9s per box, meeting with a good demand at this price. "The Liverpool market was also strong on pears. Keiffers realizing 22s 6d to 24s per barrl, iand 6s 3d to 6s 9d per box. Duchess 22s to 25s per barrel, while Winter Nelic met a god demand, sales being effected at 10s 3d to 12s 9d. "In Glasgow there have been heavy offerings of Maine :and Canadian ap ples, some 33,000 barrels in all, an a very strong demand was experienced at prices as reported. It looked like old times today! In the North Portland- market at the, o'neninc of the week's trade. There wasi a run of 88 cars In the yards over nlgh't. In the hog division more hogs came for ward over Sunday than during the en tire previous week. j , Notwithstanding this, the market for awine was considered good and isteady at $7.50 for .top offerings and sales were made early in the day at this price. Wheat closed with an advance of c to 1 a bushel over Saturday's finals. Market opened under pressure of i profit taking but quickly recovered and the closing was enly a slight reaction from the ex treme high mark for the day. Damage reports from the middle west were responsible for most of the strength here In the wheat trade dur ing the latter part of the session. Broomhall cabled from Liverpool that tho market opened iwith good support and offers light. Al- 4 though the temperature for the past week has been consider- V ably below normal, the fall sown wheat of the Walla Walla valley is suffering none, and has gone through the tough ening process in excellent shape, according to the farmers. The little snow that has fallen has served, in a measure, to protect the plants, but the freeze has not been severe enough to do any damage. The growers state they prefer con tinued cold weather to alter nating wariri and cold. Indications now are for snow, and the growers feel that the 1915 crop will be assured If a heavy blanket of the white comes to cover the fields before zero weather or lower visits the valley. The Routledge Seed A Floral Co. Is receiving heavy orders for materials for next season's planting and the In dications are that the firm's volume of business for 1915 will be the great est in the history of the company. This increase applies specialty to garden and farm seeds and tools used In cul tivating ' the crops. The firm sends out 35.000 catalogues annually. : These catalogues circulate not only in Port land, but in all sections of Oregon and reach to other states of the Pacific northwest. The firm is Just now spe cialising in a new strain of oats. Re ports from growers who received the seed two years ago are most flatter ing. The yield In some instances has run as high as 200 to 300 bushels to the a.-e, whereas the former yield ran' from 35 to 60 bushels. This new strain was developed on an Oregon farm and the experiments had been carried on systematically for a number of years before the grain was pronounced per fect. .Relative to the volume of business transacted by the Routledge company since last July, It is stated that a gain 6f 30 to 50 per cent is noted over the same period one year ago. This in crease is due largely to the marked ac tivity displayed in and about Portland since the home garden movement be came popular. Marked Improvement Foreseen. : M. R. Frel, proprietor of the Frel Pickle Works, predicts that business In his line will show a marked im provement next year. The past season was not .quite up to the standard be cause oy the poor crops in certain lines of vegetables. Hot winds and other climatic disturbances caused consider able damage to the growing crops. - Mr. Frel says that under ordinary condi tions the sale of his manufactured goods ought to be excellent. "Compe tition from eastern manufacturers has become more keen since the opening of the Panama canal and the minimum wage law as applied to apprentices cuts a considerable figure with the Oregon dealer, but it Is expected that the wide agitation in behalf of the home-made goods will go a lohg way toward making for the success of the local . manufacturer," he said. i io tin i f TO GIVE XMAS -BASKET 1 Contributions Continue to Arrive and Hope Islto Care for All Needy.
