Lan a 20 year contract may be had In which water 1ieer on government projects may pay for their water rights. Formerly a compara ' tlvely short period was allowed by the government ln which these payments could be made, as well as the mam' talnance and operating charges and which proved too heavy a tax for many of the landowners, who conse quently developed little or none of their holdings. Secretary Lane reme died this condition and as a result there is promise of the early develop ment of tha now arid lands Much preparatory work has been going on this fall on the project, most of which will be seeded to alfalfa In the spring. Although money Is' sai,d to be scarce and hard to get the activity of the local people seems to contradict such rumors. In all, there will he approxi mately 2000 acres of newly seeded ground which will make a vast change . In the general appearance of the Lima' tilla project. Among those, who are clearing and seeding their land are Stanfleld Broth rs, 400 acres west of town; Charles Skinner 200 acres east of town; J. F. McNaught, 200 acres; Dr. Hoisington, a recent eettUer from i Spokane, 50 acres. W. T. Roberts has 160 acres in course of preparation north of town. John Wllaon, on the west side of the Umatilla river, is seeding 60 acres, also J. II. Strohm 160 acres. on thewest side. Kick and Bensel are preparing 65 acres north of town, A. W. Purdy 40 acres in the east end, and F. C. Parks in the same locality Spinning Brothers in the northwest of the project are seeding 240 acres for Captain Dohler and an Alaska com psny. F. M. Milleryformerly of Se attle, will seed 200 acres, and Roy Haley of Pendleton 20 acres. In small acreage tracts of from five to 10 acres there will be about 800 acres, To the occasional visitor the pro posed Improvements will be especially wonderful, as the change of land , from sagebrush- and Jackrabblts to that of green field la the most con trasting change one could find.
