Mrs. Teal ts one of the most gracious and charming matrons of the smart set, and her functions are always enjoy abl affairs. Mlts Teal Is a bright and most Interesting girl. Since her return from school in the east last Spring, she has been at many social affairs, and 1b already known as one of the most populad debutantes of the season. i Airs. Clarkson Charming Hostess. A charming hostess of the week was Mrs. James Francis Clarkson, who en-' tertained with an elaborate auction at her handsome Irvington home on Sat urday afternoon. Fourteen tattles were arranged throughout the drawing rooms, which were artistically deco rated with autumn foliage and huge baskets of dahlias, harmonizing in tone with the colors of the various rooms. Card honors fell to Mrs. C. A. Coolidge, Mrs. Horace Luckett and Mrs. A. JR. Draper. While refresh ments were being 8erved,muaical num bers were rendered by Miss Marie Chapman, violinist: Mrs. A. F. Petzel nd Miss Nona I,awler, vocalists, with Frederick Uoodrich at the piano. Assisting is receiving were Mrs. Frank , Trudeau Wilson. Mrs. Edmund T. Madden and Miss Rldgcley, sister of the hostess. Mueh interest Is being shown by the society and clubwomen of the city and others interested In social service, in the Christmas Ship, which, through the agency of 100 of the leading news papers of the country, is to be sent to the war zone laden with warm cloth ing, bedding, Imperishable food and toys to bring a little Christmas cheer to tha desolate widows and children. A meeting of all women interested In this splendid movement Is called for tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock In the auditorium of The Journal building. Attendance at this meeting does not carry any obligation, but Is simply culled for the purpose of exchanging ideas on how to make Portland's share - trr -the Christ mas- - -Ship- -of greatest vslue. . To Pass Winter East, Mrs. Amanda Kerr, accompanied by Miss Katherine Dunbar, left Sunday vening for the east. They will join Mrs. Kerr's daughter and her hus band, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Holbrook, In Brookllne, Mass., for the winter. Miss Dunbar, who Is possessed of a beaullffWl contralto voice, will continue her vocsT study this winter In Boston. She has been solo contralto at the St. Francis church for "several years past. Mr. and Mrs. ftorris Hosts. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew -Dickinson Norris were hosts last evening at an Informal bridge party of three tabks. Othick, well known dramatic soprano, will be mar ried in Salt Lake City Wednesday noon. October 14, to Roy P. Madden of that city. Thus ends a romance started in Butte, Mont., during an engagement there of Madam Othick. . Mile. Henriette L- Huillier, who is well known in club circles in Portland, having had charge of the French de partment of the Woman's club, has returned to the city, after an extend ed visit at Mount Angel, Or., and Is now registered at the Hotel Benson. Small, James Heusleton, Lei and Smith and the host and hostess. Left lor Extended Trip. Mrs. Edith S. Hatfield has left for Eden, Idaho, where she will pass come time at her Diamond "H ranch. Later she will visit .in Chicago, St. Louis and New Tork, returning west via New Orleans and California. She will pass two months at the fair before returning to Portland. Arte and Craft Annual Meeting at Tea. Tomorrow afternoon the Arts and Crafts society will bold its annual meeting and election of officers at the central library, room A, at 3 o'clock. Mrs. Lee JHof froaft, president, will preside at the election of offi cers for the ensuing year, after which an informal tea will follow. z "500" Party. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Called to San FranciscOfor a week by the resurrection of An old suit. "Painless" Parker returned to Portland Saturday to renew his fight against what he calls the dental trust. Dr. Parker -asserts the ethical dentists tried to "shanghai- him by having the case shoved ahead on the docket In the hope that it would keep him in San Francisco and away from the cam paign in this state. The jury returned a verdict in favor of Dr. rarker, now ever, and strangely enough, he says, it was the evidence of Dr. J. M. Sharp, dean of the dental department of the University of California, that con vinced the jury In his favor. It was expected Dr. Sharp's testimony would clinch the case against Parker.
