Frederick Holllster, Democratic can didate for congressman from the First district. Is making, a strong campaign . for election, and reports received ' at Democratic state headquarters indicate that h is meeting with remarkable success. . "The many' and very favorable re ports coming in from all sections of the First congressional district re garding the campaign of Mr. HoIIister are astonishing to ua," said O. Y. Harry, who has active charge of the Democratic state headquarters. "Every mail Is bringing requests for literature bearing on the congressional race, and these requests are not all coming from Democrats, either. "There seems to be sweeping through the minds of the people all over . the state a determination to uphold the hands of the president. The ' people are reasoning that for the next two years of the Wilson administration the president should have a congress In accord with his great constructive pro gram yet .unfinished. GUve President Chance. "They believe in giving him a chance to. 'prove up.' and that if hid policies prove unpopular a change can be made ' at the next presidential election. As President Lincoln said, they don't be lieve in swapping horses while cross ing a stream. "I have a letter this morning from 8. A. Kasterday of Clatskanie, in which he says: " 'Call the attention of the people of , the First congressional district to the treacherous act of Representative Hawley on September 5 in the house (Congressional Record, pages 16,154 to 19.158) whereby he attempted to do nate all the coal fields of Alaska to the Cunninghams, Uuggenheims and Fittocks. . ... . " 'I have certainly misjudged Repre sentative Hawley, as I thought he only voted heretofore as Instructed by the interests, but be Is becoming bold er in his older age. Even now I can't' believe he initiated this amendment, but that It was prepared by an attor ney for the interests. Even Congressman Mann Balked, V 'Even old Jim Mann balked on Hawley's amendment and Humphries Of Washington, while, he favofed the amendment, was afraid to go on record with his vote. " TVlti i Booth in the senate and Hawley "in the house the interests would be ably represented. " 'What Is Oregon coming to, any way 7" "This Is a sample of the many let ters being received ' at headquarters from all over the district and is In-1 dlcatlve that the peopljr aire watching and arejbecomtng acquainted with the record of Congressman Hawley as a stand pat Cannon-Aldrlch reactionary." Lane Will Vote On New County Proposition Ii to Make - County of 81 nslaw Oat of Territory West of the Coast Mountains. Eugene, Or Oct 1. The question of creating the new county of Siuslaw out of Lane county will be submitted to the voters of Dane county at the general election in November. The acounty court has made an order placing the question upon , the ballot 'and providing for the neces sary polling places, after the proper petitions had been filed and after it bad been ascertained by the county . clerk that there were enough names of bona fide voters upon the petitions. This movement ' was started at - a convention held at Mapleton last spring. Robert S. Huston, editor and publisher of the Siuslaw Pilot at Florence, was elected chairman of an executive committee which has had charge of the work of circulating the petitions. He filed them yesterday. The , petitions contain many more names than required by law. showing the popularity of the measure. This measure win be voted upon un der the Wood law which allows the people of any specified territory to pe tition for a new county and gives It to them if 65 per cent of the people in the district vote for it and 35 per cent-of the people outside the district in the old- county vote for it. Mr. Huston Is sanguine of the success of the measure. The new county, if cre ated, will include all of that territory west of the Coast mountains In Lane county.
