TEAL URGED T0G0T0 WASH1I mm IN BEHALF OF THE BILL Commercial Club Executive Committee Holds Special Meeting, SITUATION SAID GftAVE Xntlxe Country WiU Be Asked to Join In Campaign for Waterway Improremante. Tomorrow! Meier & Frank's riday S urprise Sale TOMORROWONLY Joseph N.' Teal was urged to ro to "Washington forthwith in behalf of the rivers and harbors bill by unanimous ote of the Commercial club executive committee In special session yesterday even inf. The Chamber of Commerce was asked to communicate with business and clrlc bodies of the Pacific north west, the Pacific coast, the Mississippi valley and? elsewhere asking; them to send their ablest men to Washington with Mr. Teal, that meritorious proj ects are at stake. "The situation is exceedingly grave. said Walter F. Burrell in proposing the action which was taken. "It would be much better, and eco nomically sounder, to keep at work the J 200 or 1400 men who have been thrown out of employment by the suspension of government work on Columbia river improvements," said Franklin T. Grif fith, chairman of the committee. Millions at Stake. All were agreed that there is at stake not only the Iosh of work by more than a thousand men, not only the more than $6,000,000 of appropriations pro posed In the bill for the Columbia river basin and the Oregon coast, but also the 130,000,000 and more appropriated for these uncompleted projects, to gether with all the commerce we ex pect to gain by means of the facilities provided namely, open ports along the coast, a 40 loot channel over the Co lumbia river bar, a 30 foot channel from Portland to the sea, and an open river from the sea to the Inland Em pire. Declnlve and prompt action wais voted absolutely necessary. Chairman Griffith appointed a com mittee composed of Walter F. Burrell, Guy W. Talbot and John C Alnsworth to wait upon Mr. Teal immediately and acquaint lilm with the action taken. Mr. Griffith accompanied the commit tee when It went to Mr. Teal's offices at 5 o'clock, Mr. Teal, in his turn. Immediately telegraphed east to learn when his pre . sentatlon of the western situation will be most helpful to passage of the bill. Projects Mtri to lions. The committee urges the passage of the rivers and harbors bill as a whole. It took the position that available sources of information show conclu sively that the major portion of the bill proposes projects entirely meritor ious, and that if there is any "pork," or unjustified projects, they are so few in number and so minor in char acter as not to be discernible, and cer tainly not sufficient to warrant acquiescence to the opposition that In tends defeat of the bill as a whole. The attendance at the executive com mittee meeting yesterday was unusual " ly representative. There were present Franklin T. Griffith, president of the Portland Railway, Light & Power Co.; W. M. I,add. of Ladd & Tilton bank; J. C. Alnsworth, of United States Nat ional bank; Guy W. Talbot, president Pacific Power & Light company; Wal ter F. Burrell, of the Burrel Invest ment company; L. C. Gllman, president 6. P. & 8. railway company; Julius L. Meier, of the Meier & Frank company; Tom Richardson, of the Oregon Devel opment league; Edgar B. Piper, of the Oreaonian; A. II. Averill, of the Averlll Machinery company, president o Chamber of Commerce; J. T. Broom field for E. Ehrman of Mason Ehrman & Co.; O. C. Chapman, manager of the Commercial club. To indicate the character of the op position to the bill, letters from Sen ators W. E. Borah, of Idaho, and Theo dore Burton, of Ohio, were read. These letters declared their writers' oppo sition to the measure, but. In the face of requests for particulars, named no projects that were bad. B Semi-Annual Remnant Sale Wool Dress Goods Price!
