SPORTS ENJOYED BY ALL BtcM, Ball Danes, Bandar Among Kott FoptUAr BlTerslons of Ex cnrslonlsts; Contest Xerolts. Far-away looks In the eyes of gro cery clerks and hints of drooptness in the shoulders of pretty cashiers were reminders today of the Jolly time at Hull Run park yesterday when 2000 grocers, employes and friends partici pated in the annual picnic. It was late at night before the last train got back to Portland, and everybody was happy in spite of a composite weari Tiess that made necessary a rapid transit to the "hay." There were sports for one and all. Races, ball games, dancing and lunch were the favorites, and the Spanish War Veterans' "sons" drum corps and l.a Van way's band supplied plenty of stirring music. The contests resulted as follows: Ball game Salesmen beat employers iy a score or 8 to e. Wornen'M ball throwing- contest Miss Loretta Liynch first; Mrs. A. M. Hay re, second; Mrs. K. R. U'Ren May Forego Running for Office Xf Candidate Xemalns In Gubernatorial j Bsc He May Hare to' BoIoh Fro-1 Mbitlonist Only, It Is possible that W. S. U'Ren of I Oregon City will have to forego his Intention to run as an independent candidate for governor and if he re mains in the race do so solely as the nominee of the Prohibition party. This will be due to section 8359 of the election laws, which was amended by the last legislature. This section says: "No independent or nonpartlson can didate shall be permitted to use any word of the name of any existing po litical party or organization in his can didacy, nor shall he be permitted to Use any other name than 'Independent' or "Nonpartisan.' " As Mr. U'Ren has accepted the nom- inatlon of the Prohibition party, it appears that he will be prevented from also running as an independent candi date. - Mr. U'Ren has written to Secretary of State Ben W. Olcott for his inter pretation of the section in question, and it Is known also that he has given instructions to have-the circulation of the petitions for his independent can didacy stopped. It was reported yesterday that Mr. U'Ren would withdraw entirely from the race, but he denies this and says he intends to stay in the running. Come Early!
