Yacht Club Dance.
At the Oregon Yacht club this even
ing the S, D, O. R. club will hold a
midsummer shirtwaist dance. The pa
tronesses for the event are: Mrs. W.
Doyle, Mrs. C Spencer und Mrs. O. F.
Olsen. The committee In charge con
sists of Miss Gordon Spencer, Miss
Hazel Doyle, Ray Olsen and Willis

Kansas Society Box Social.
The Kansas Jayhawker society ' of
Oregon meets tomorrow night in Man
chester hall, Fifth and Oak streets. A
box social will be a feature of the
meeting, and a play by members of the
society's dramatic club will be given,
also vocal solos by Miss E. Naugle,
soprano, and J. O. Leake, baritone. The
Kansas society, while only organized
last September, now is the second larg
est state society in Portland, and with
the steadily Increasing membership ex
pects to shortly compete for first place.

WOMAN PERFORMS FEAT .
- OF SWIMMING WILLAMETTE
Contest Country-Wide.
To be called "the handsomest Amer
ican" Is something, but to. have been
voted that by 'thousands of fellow
Americans is a great deal more. The
man . who holds that distinction - is
Francis X. Bushman, who will be in
Portland this week, Mr. Bushman
won his title through a recent contest
held by the Ladies' World in connec
tion with its serial, "One Wonderful
Night."
As soon as the winner was an
nounce 1 the Essanay Motion Picture
company began filming the story with
Mr. Bushman playing the lead. Truly
the old era ..of matinee idols is pass
ing when a man becomes such through
his pictures alone and when he is wor
shiped as such? on the screen by mati
nee girls from one end of the country
to the other.
In a remarkably short time from the
date of Mr. Bushman's being announced
the handsomest and most typical Amer
ican, the film story has been completed
and the great advantage of the present
day screen matinee idol over the old
stage matinee idol allows Mr. Bush
man to be seen simultaneously in many
cties by those who had a share in giv
ing him his new title.
PERSONAL MENTION
Will Tour State by Auto.
C. G. Chapman of the Commercial
club and Phil Bates of the Pacific
Northwest, will leave Portland tomor
row morning over the Barlow road for
a 10-days'. tour of some of the central
and northeastern Oregon eounties. Mrs,
Chapman and her mother, Mrs. C. M.
Klrkwood, an Oregon pioneer of 1843,
will be members - of the auto party.
The autolsta plan to visit the larger
towns of Grant and Wheeler counties,
stopping at Fossil, Canyon City, John
Day, Prairie City and Dayville. From
Grant county they will go north
through Baker and Wallowa, stopping
at Baker, Enterprise, Wallowa, Joseph,
La Grands and Union.

Will Visii Chair Trade.
J. A. Kingsley. president and gen
eral manager of the Oregon Chair
company, plans to leave Portland next
Sunday for an extensive auto tour of
California. He will ship his car by
boat to Los Angeles and starting from
there he will pick up the California
salesmen of his company and will visit
the furniture trade in all of the larger
cities ' and- towns of the state. The
Oregon Chair company has a large bus
iness in California and Mr. Kingsley
will meet the customers of his com
pany. Returning, he will also visit
the furniture houses of southern Ore
gon and the Willamette valley.
Visits Colorado on Vacation.
W. C. McBride, general agent of
the Denver & Rio- Grande and the
Gould lines, has gone to Colorado for
a two-weeks' vacation. He will meet
his family On a ranch there and enjoy
the outdoors among the mountains
Leave for Vacation.
District Attorney Evans and W. H.
Cbatten, with their families, left today
for the Siletz reservation, where they
will spend the next three weeks living
close to nature. Mr. Evans Was armed
with a license which will permit him
to kill three deer, if he can shoot
straight enough, and another which
will permit him to try to catch some
trout. His deputies are waiting witn
bated . breath to hear tales of his
prowess.

The river is about half a mile wide
at the point where Mrs. Butling
crossed and no little task for one not
in training for distance swims. She
accomplished It, however, with little
difficulty and wltbvid tiring after ef

Pouring Concrete at Eugene.
Eugene. Or.. July 21. Excavations
for Eugene's new $110,000 high school
are nearly finished and the work of
pouring the concrete for the basement
walls has begun. The contract for the
superstructure will be let "July 29.
Several Portland men and at least four
Eugene men, besides one at Roseburg,
will bid on .the structure.
Wabash Securities Authorized.
.St. Louis, July 21. Federal Judge
Adams has authorized Receiver Pryor
of the Wabash to Issue $16,000,000 in
receiver's certificates.

for One Week.
After knocking his wife unconscious
Frank S&lyman refused to assist her,
she testified yesterday afternoon in
the domestic relations branch of the
municipal court. , They live at Lents,
the wife working one place to support
herself and child while the husband
works at another to support himself.
Mrs. Salyman told the judge she
went to the home to get her bedroom
slippers . last Friday afternoon. Saly
man, she said, pushed her off the ver
anda, dragged her around the house
and. struck her on the chest, rendering
her unconscious. .Neighbors saw the
affair and went to her aid. The hus
band 14 said to have walked away. The
judge 6rdered the case continued for
one week to allow the parties a chance
to think over their trouble and come
to an agreement if possible.
No Inquest Will Be
Held in Elling Case
Coroner After Investigation Declares
Both Cars Making Good Speed and
Accident Unavoidable,
There will be no Inquest in the case
of Mrs. Frans Elling, who died Friday
at the Good Samaritan hospital from
injuries received in an auto wreck a
few days ago at East Twenty-fourth
and Burnside streets. .
C C. Emery was driving the automo
bile that hit the machine in which Mrs:
Elling. her husband and daughter were
riding, and which J. HL Fournier was
driving.
The coroner Investigated the affair,
reporting both autos making good speed
and the accident unavoidable, in which
no criminal carelessness could be ob
served. Elling has a broken shoulder,
while the daughter, is slightly , injured.
Auto Party Thrown

La Grande, Or.. July 21. To be som

ment of Fourth street without serious

of five last evening.
Mrs. Frank Pike, in whose car the
party was seeing La Grande, was
caught tinder the steering wheel and
was braised. 1 Eddie and Joe Hannon
of this city. Miss Albert of Hunting
ton, Conductor Conners of Pendleton,
and Mrs. Frank Pike of this city were
out enjoying the evening and in com
ing down Fourth street hill, probably
gathered more speed than Mrs. Pike
imagined, and In turning tne right an
gled corner, at the foot of the hill the
car tipped completely over. AH had
to be helped from under the machine,
some being without a scratch of any
kind. " . -
