Flour, has long ren on -of tno principal exports from tho Pacific coast to China, but other markets are making bids for this busi ness, and they are securing a consid erable share of .the trade. Various , reasons contribute to the Inroads upon . the Pacific coast export business In ' flour,, one of which is the reputation, that has heen i riven the flour from California, Oregon and Washington of i not having sufficient gluten content. .However, this iwere it the "only rea- . 'on,- could be overcome, perhaps, by a Judicious blending of wheats entering Into the manufacture of the flour, i . During the year 1913 the importa- i tlons df flour at Hongkong were valued I. at 15.190.000. belnjg in quantity 6,176,- 2i bags, while in 1912 the Importa tions amounted to 5,722,954 bags, val ued, at about $6,000,000, and th4s touched the high water mark for flour 1 Imports at this; port. Dealers found the flour business In 1913 unprofitable because of changing prices, provincial currency, disorders and other troubles which. prevented; the moving of stocks and the collection of accounts. " Canada Enters Market. ;' Canada came into the market In 1913. writes Consul General George E. Anderson . of Hongkong, for the first time In the history of the trade, with about 320,000 bags, . improved railway facilities making possible the shipment to China of some flour-which formerly sought a market In Europe. - Australia also sent China some flour, and evi dently looks to that country for a future market.- Still this competition did not affect the exporters' of Amert- I can flour to. such a degree as the lm- . paired values of the Chinese currency in South China. - This-year the. North .China ani , xangize vaiiey mum entered into com. petition with American flour in South China to but a limited extent because of the scarce and poor quality of the grain supplies. Nevertheless, it Is , reported that the new ,year opened T .wlth'a fair trade in flour -and there ' has been .a fair prospect for a steady p trade If satisfactory conditions can be maintained. .
