THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL. PORT AND, FRIDAY EVENING, MAY 22. 1B14. COUPON PLAN GUARDS CUSTOMERS AGAINST SHORT WEIGHT IN ICE Splendid 35c Luncheon Served Tomorrow in Our Beautiful Seventh Floor Restaurant The Business Men's Noonday Rendezvous System Adopted by One Lo , cal Dealer May Become General in Portland. Man Alive! You Should See These New Summer Suits, Just Received From One of the Foremost Clothing Makers of America 377 Haedsome New Smimmeir Suite CHART ALSO FURNISHED Bayera Are Enabled to Cbaek Up on .Their DellTerlee; Temptation Za BimOTiA From the Srlvar. 20 Mews far MeoH i Short weight" In Ice means that the consumer iH not getting all the Ice lie pays for. There has been a good deal of talk about such shortages In l'ortland recently and to protect Its consumers one company lias adopted a coupon if y mem of selling Ice and an Ice measuring chart -for checking up on the amount of Ice received. These Innovations are so radically In favor of the consumer that their Immediate adoption by other companies has been predicted. "It Is to our advantage to give our customers every pound of Ice they pay for," said James L.. Duffy, fi.?s man ager of the Ice Delivery company, this morning. "There is no profit in cheat ing customers or giving dissatisfac tion. "To protect our customers we have devised a system of coupon books at a lower than cash rate to be used by our customers In paying for ice, thereoy removing any temptation from our drivers to give short weight. Drlvsr Pockets Money. "If a driver gives short weight to a customer It is our loss as well as a loss to the customer. The driver who short weights a customer sells the dif ference for tiKli somewhere else and pockets th money. As far as we know all our drivers are honest and reliable men, but to guaid against short weighing and to protect the consumer in every way possible we are urging the use of these coupons. " "That the ice users of the city may check up on the amount of Ice they are getting we have devised an ice measuring chart. We expect to senii out 15.000 of these to housekeepers of the city, while facsimiles will be pub lished In the dally papers. This chart has bern prepared with the approval of the city sealer of weights and meas ures. It will show approximately how much Ice has been received. .Suppos ing one measurement of the ice to be constant, 10 inches, from the size of the Ice machine, the customer will measure the other two with a rule or tape. Suppose one aide measures 16 inches and the xecond 12V. Looking nt the cburt where 1 2 V4 and 16 meet, lie will find the figure 70. Customer Mart Cooperate, . "This means thnt a piece of ice of the aforesaid cubic dimensions weighs in close proximity to 70 pounds and the customer may know within a pound or two whether he In getting all that he pays for. "If customers will use these charts short weighing will soon become a thing of the past, l'rum the physical character of ice It Is manifestly im possible for an ice manufacturer to send out 10, 20 or 100 pound chunks of ice from Its plant to each customer. The Ice has to be cut at the consumer's door and the company is forced to rely on the drivers honesty, that he will give tire customer full weight. "The solution of the Ice problem lies If the cooperation of the customer with the ice-company. Short weighing if discovered should be reported, that the company may investlgatu and pro tect its customers."
