Seattle, Wash., May 22. With the
University of California's crew much
improved since the triangular race in
the south, and Washington In better
shape to race four miles than three,
followers of the crew looked today for
a sharp battle between the rivals in
the regatta on Lake Washington ' late
this afternoon.
Washington is the favorite in the
betting and is out to make certain its
right to go to Poughkeepsie as coast
champions.
Captain Shaw of California was
confident. He was sure his men
would do better than In the south,
where, he said, they drew a position
where the tide greatly hampered them.
For the past week Coach Conlbear
has been training his men ever a
course lonarer than the three miles
which will be rowed today. This Is In
preparation for the four mile grind
at Poughkeepsie. He says, however.
that his eight has ldenty of sprinting
ability and will b able to get fun
speed over the shorter course.
In addition to the varsity race ther
will be single sculling between Ban
nister and Stewart, two members of
the varsity boat club, and an exhibi
tion race between two freshmen eights
stroked by Hardie and Simonds and
the second varsity, stroked tempo
rarily by Captain Zimmerman. Suffi
cient handicaps will be given the
fresh eights to bring all three eights
at the finish at about the same time.
Washington took Its last workout
yesterday afternoon and California
went for a limbering up cruise this
forenoon.
